Essential Job Duties:
The desired candidate for the Associate Director NC State Extension & State Program Leader for Agriculture and Natural Resources position should process or build a comprehensive knowledge of the day-to-day program and operations of North Carolina Cooperative Extension (CES), as well as an understanding of the NC agricultural industry. This understanding would include state, federal and county budgets, budget processes, policy rules and regulations, the dynamics, industries, organizations, and politics of NC agriculture and how they all are impacted by Extension's Long Range Plan.
The position works with the Director to represent and strategically position and market CES to internal and external partners, stakeholders and clients. The position also works with the Director to envision and provide oversight for the agents, specialists, and faculty that implement the plan. He/she provides leadership to the Department Extension Leaders, Program Teams, and all Agriculture and Natural Resources/Community Resource Development (ANR/CRD) Extension programs (county and state).
The Associate Director works closely with the Director, program leaders, the Accountability and Evaluation Coordinator, and the NC A&T State University program leaders to ensure program planning and reporting needs are met. The individual should work to design and align all objectives around prioritized needs as identified by appropriate needs assessments and to ensure all organizational and administrative reports are prepared and submitted on time.
The position coordinates and fosters greater collaboration among departments, counties, administration, and with NC A&T to improve efficiencies, outcomes, and effectiveness of programs and the organization. He/she helps develop strategic relationships among specialists and agents to ensure short- and long-term programmatic training and development of ANR/CRD agents and specialists. The position ensures current technical information is available through publications and Extension portals and is readily available to and formatted for county agents to deliver educational programs and technical support.
Responsible for reviewing county Plans of Work as needed, faculty Statements of Mutual Expectations, and promotion and tenure documents for ANR/CRD to ensure outcomes and impacts are achieved. The position manages units of Extension Information Technology, Community Development, Accountability and Evaluation, and Plants for Human Health Institute Extension. The Associate Director manages budgets for these units, as well as funds for Program Teams, special projects, and requested agent training programs within ANR/CRD.
The Associate Director works collaboratively with peers in the NC Agricultural Research Service and College of Natural Resources to serve as administrative advisor/liaison for commodity groups, SERA, other multi-state projects, Extension and Research Centers, committees of the State Association of County Commissioners, and other state and federal government agencies. He/she will work with peers in Research and Academics to implement college-wide policies, procedures and special activities.
The position serves as primary support to the Director and may participate in events, make decisions, or adopt issues in his/her place, as well as provide information, analysis, or opinion on issues and decisions to be made. They also work with College Advancement to help guide relations for ANR. The incumbent independently handles special requests and adopts leadership for relevant special projects and issues to positively represent Extension, the College, and the University and to help solve critical issues.

Requires doctor’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience, or master’s degree, an equivalent degree, or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated leadership and success in extension programming, agent training, organizational leadership, budget management and personnel supervision.
Demonstrated personal ethics and integrity, belief in value of the diversity, servant leadership, successful leadership of and participation on teams.
Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
Demonstrated effectiveness in networking, negotiation, strategic thinking, prioritization and critical decision making.
Ability to successfully engage, motivate, and lead people.
Experience in Extension Administration preferred.
Proven ability to effectively coordinate programs with administrators in other colleges and units within NC State and/or NC A&T State University.
