The Department ofDevelopment and Alumni Relations (DAR) assists Vanderbilt University in securingthe resources, both human and financial, that are required to achieve itsmission and goals. The Department is responsible for theidentification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individuals andorganizations whose charitable objectives are consistent with those ofVanderbilt University's teaching and research programs.
The office ofDevelopment and Alumni Relations Campaign Communications (DARCC) providesstrategic counsel to internal colleagues and crafts messages for alumni,parent, student and donor audiences focused on enhancing engagement with andsupport of institutional mission and goals. The Campaign Communications teamhas responsibility for development and alumni relations projects spanning theuniversity. In support of its purpose and in response to existing and emergingneeds, the office is seeking an experienced and proven professional to serve asassistant director of communications for Development and Alumni RelationsCampaign Communications.
As part of a team ofDevelopment and Alumni Relations Campaign Communications professionalssupporting the university, the assistant director of communications will havethe following responsibilities:
Cultivates strong partnerships with colleagues responsible for annual giving and serves as strategic communications advisor. Develops content and writes communications materials to support efforts of annual giving programs, including solicitations, stewardship and volunteer outreach. This includes conceptualizing, researching, writing, editing and advising on direct mail and email appeals and other materials (both traditional and digital media) for annual giving constituents.
Duties also include coordinating project teams and implementing strategies and content for efforts related to cohesive messaging for key constituencies, which may include such projects as news articles, talking points, invitations, ads, newsletters, website content and social media campaigns.
Collaborates with colleagues responsible for annual giving on yearlyschedule of appeals and stewardship, ensuring full coordination of messaging and timing.
Ensures online giving content is current, compelling and persuasive and focuses on Vanderbilt's philanthropic priorities.
Works closely with colleagues in Development and Alumni Relations to maximize effectiveness of development communications and provides annual giving programs and others with the tools they need to most effectively meet Vanderbilt University's philanthropic and constituent engagement goals.
Collaborates with colleagues in annual giving to implement traditional and digital media strategies into annual giving processes.
Partners with colleagues in annual giving programs, and with other communication professionals, faculty and staff throughout the university. Provides outstanding service to colleagues in support of universitymission.
Tests and analyzes performance of communications pieces in achieving fundraising and engagement goals. Uses data to inform future communications efforts.
Assists Development and Alumni Relations Campaign Communications in implementing and evaluating a comprehensive communications program in support of Development and Alumni Relations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
This position does not have any direct reports. This position reportsadministratively and functionally to the Director of Communications.
Profile of an IdealCandidate
A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, is required.
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of communications experience, preferably in higher education, or a record of demonstrated achievement in a field requiring the application of similar skills.
Candidates considered for further consideration will be asked to provide a writing sample.
Communications professional with excellent track record of customer service and project management. Highly motivated team player with strong interpersonal skills for effective interactions working with internal and external individuals.
Excellent proofreading skills with precise attention to detail. Familiarity with AP Style a plus.
Ability to work independently, assuming responsibility, prioritizing and carrying out duties with a minimum of supervision.
Excellent organizational skills, oral and written communications skills, and the ability to articulate the needs, interests, and accomplishments of Vanderbilt University to a wide range of audiences are required.
