The primary purpose of this position is to direct the strategy, planning, design, implementation and administration of NCCI’s total rewards programs including compensation, benefits and HR systems and reporting. The Head of Total Rewards is ultimately responsible for the competitiveness and cost effectiveness of the company’s compensation and benefits programs and their adequacy with respect to the attraction, retention and development of talent across all levels. S/he will evaluate and make contemporary the company’s Total Rewards strategy as needed by leveraging internal benefits resources and in collaboration with external vendors. Further, the Head of Total Rewards will add rigor to the governance of total rewards, especially relative to important analytics necessary for organizational decision-making and maximum operating efficiency. This role serves as an advisor, developer and leader of best-practice rewards initiatives, and provides leadership to all business areas, the Board/Compensation Committee and HR leaders with respect to compensation/rewards philosophy, strategy and execution. Additionally, this role will create a rewards philosophy and framework that is malleable to meet a diverse range of talent segments, including local market needs, yet maintains overall consistency aligned to the company’s business objectives and improves risk mitigation. HR Technology and People Analytics will be critical components of this leader’s mandate as NCCI moves increasingly towards cloud based systems and more predictive analytics within Human Resources. This leader will need to bring immense creativity and curiosity, coupled with an analytical mindset, to translate analytics into actionable insights for business leaders and the executive HR team.
Researches, designs, proposes, and implements benefit programs including health & welfare, wellness, pension, workers compensation, and fringe benefit plans.
Assures compliance with plan contracts and governmental legislation as appropriate. Maintains and applies knowledge of current and emerging trends in employee benefit matters, competitive practices and applicable legislative changes.
Consults on complex benefits matters to ensure consistent application of policies and mandated legislation.
Manages vendor relationships and recommends changes, as appropriate.
Conducts company-wide benefits open enrollment annually. Oversees large company-wide benefits budget and expenses.
Directs NCCI's human resource information system function including system implementations and upgrades, management and governmental reporting, process improvement and metrics tracking.
Demonstrated aptitude in diagnosing complex technical challenges and developing solutions that support the overarching business goals and HR strategies.
Experience with HCM Systems (Success Factors, Workday, Ceridian, ADP, etc.) in order to help NCCI transition to the Cloud and deliver a more seamless and digital employee experience.
Researches best practices within HR Technology, evaluates emerging trends, and keeps appraised of technological advancements and current benchmarks.
Researches, designs, proposes, develops and implements base pay and incentive compensation programs including program philosophy, communications, pay structures, pay effectiveness, market studies for competitiveness, pay administration, and job descriptions/evaluations.
Maintains and applies knowledge of current and emerging trends in compensation matters, competitive practices and applicable legislative changes.
Consults on complex compensation matters to ensure consistent application of policies and mandated legislation.
Manages vendor relationships and recommends changes, as appropriate.
Manages and administers NCCI's executive compensation and benefits programs including preparation of Compensation Committee materials for the Board of Directors.
Contains experience in breadth of compensation design, including executive compensation, incentive programs (equity and non-equity programs), compensation operations experience, position evaluation principles and analysis, and wage and salary administration.
Develops, prepares and presents recommendations for senior management and the Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors.
Containing boardroom presence, including ability to clearly explain complex issues and “think on feet.”
Manages and directs assigned staff.
Duties include, but are not limited to, decisions about: hiring and staffing; position design, organization structure; performance assessment; coaching; pay; and corrective action and separations.
Develops, reviews, and/or approves work schedules, work assignments, work processes, PTO and other time-off requests, and development through relevant training programs for staff.
Pivotal Expertise & Experience:
Total Rewards Strategy: 10+ years of experience required; has designed and implemented both executive and broad-based compensation and benefits strategies.
Business Orientation: Track record of collaboration with senior management to design and gain approval on a total rewards strategy to align with business strategies, including attracting and retaining top talent.
Board/Compensation Committee: Has prepared and presented to the compensation committee of the board of directors as well as engaged outside consultants on executive compensation.
Technology/Analytical Orientation: Has strong exposure and understanding of HR Information Systems including experience with system conversations and implementations. Overall, this person must be deeply analytical and data-driven in approach to HR Technology within Human Resources.
Change Management: Comfortable leading change management initiatives with a track record of success executing organization change and developing initiatives in a fast paced, evolving, and thoughtful business environment.
High credibility in the Total Rewards space: looked to as thought leader and builds trust through actions and results.
Commercially and Externally Oriented: aware of commercial and external trends within not only Total Rewards, but also importantly HR Technology and HR organization as a whole.
Bright business person with strong analytical and process skills; must have a mix of technical hands-on experience and strategic business acumen.
Strong partnering ability and influencing skills; able to gain alignment across stakeholders; able to blend program/project management with relationship management.
