International House is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, self-supporting residential and community-oriented program center located in the southeast foothills of the Berkeley Campus. We are in search of a seasoned Director of Hospitality Services to join our International House management team. The position involves oversight and ability to complete complex planning and logistics, client interaction, contracting, organization of each event, staffing, scheduling, billing and ordering foodstuffs in excess of $4 million annually.
The incumbent will have a strong track record of providing exceptional food service in a multi-faceted and dynamic environment. Under the direction of the Director of Administrative Services, he/she will be responsible for Dining, Catering and Events and the I-House Café services. The incumbent will oversee a staff of eight career employees: 1 Executive Chef, 3 Food Service Supervisors, 1 Events Manager, 1 Events Coordinator, 1 Catering Manager and 1 Catering Coordinator and approximately 60 student workers.
While serving an average of 1,100 meals daily to some 600 I-House residents, external customers and guests, the primary focus of the Dining Commons is to provide a healthy and convivial dining environment and encourage a strong sense of community among a highly diverse resident body through the sharing of meals together. Oversees both the Catering and Events/Rentals Departments. These two inter-related departments serve hundreds of events per year and involve activities associated with reaching, serving, and engaging external departments, alumni, local community, government, parents, as well as the general public. A companion to the I-House Dining Commons, the I-House Café provides light food and beverages, including beer and wine and will have a support staff of 1 Food Service Supervisor and 2 student workers.
The Director of Hospitality Services is also responsible for establishing operational objectives and initiatives that align with the overall goals of the organization through subordinate managers. Provides resources to meet established schedules and goals. Monitors and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans and performance requirements. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Involved in developing, modifying and executing well established policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements that affect immediate operations and may have campus-wide impact. Works on issues where analysis of situations or information requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives.
•Oversees direction of employees to complete services using established food safety guidelines, procedures and quality control. Training and development of employees, manages assignment of tasks and develops and maintains schedules. Responsible for on boarding process for new staff. •Manages food inventories, vendor deliveries, food preparation, and menu planning while adhering to strict regulatory guidelines. •Designs serving and seating area set-up, and administers and monitors performance requirements. •Oversight of catering services for clients, including menu planning, pricing & budgets for events, catering agreements, organizing timing of events, staffing needs and food & beverage needs. •Meet with customers and potential clients to preview and tour I-House event locations throughout the facility as well as client locations that may be located off site. •Working in concert with the HR Manager, administers performance and personnel management initiatives. Takes appropriate personnel actions in accordance with all UC and Department HR policies, procedures and collective bargaining agreements (cba). •Audits and ensures compliance of food prep to QA standards and safety/security related to handling and preparation of food. •Ensures all staff maintain exceptional customer service standards through consistent training and communication. Ensures these standards are maintained at the beginning, middle and end of all meal service periods. Assists functional unit as needed. •Engages with and actively participates on the Resident Dining Advisory Committee to continuously improve the dining experience for residents and customers.•Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which directly relates to the knowledge and abilities listed above; typically a culinary, business administration degree and/or other related courses. •Experience: Ten years of progressively responsible experience in the food service/culinary industry and at least five (3) years of which must have been at a supervisory level.
