The Vice President of Development (VP Development) is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of Chicago Children’s Museum’s fundraising programs for operations, capital, and endowment, with specific focus on growing the individual giving area, including major gifts, special events, annual appeals and donor stewardship. The VP Development will be expected to meet and grow Chicago Children’s Museum current contributed revenue, along with current and future campaigns. The VP Development manages the Board of Directors, and works directly with members of the Board of Directors, Auxiliary Board, and Metropolitan Board, as well as key volunteers and staff to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward gifts to support Chicago Children’s Museum. This position will be directly responsible for cultivating and stewarding relationships with potential and current donors, as well as hiring and developing motivated, donor-focused staff who nurture relationships to grow contributed revenue.

Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:
· Partner with Fundraising Consultant to complete the current campaign (approx. $1M remaining of a $16M campaign);
· Build and implement a robust, diverse fundraising platform with clearly defined revenue goals and a strategic mix of successful giving and fundraising programs.
· Develop a strategic giving plan to strengthen and expand existing support in all areas, including major gifts.
· Partner with Vice President of Institutional Giving and Development Operations on strategies to increase corporate, foundation, government grants and sponsorship revenue.
· Oversee and grow the individual giving program including major gifts, annual fund, direct mail, e-philanthropy, and social media;
· Identify, develop, test and lead innovative new and ongoing development initiatives, strategies, activities, and partnerships;
· Work closely with CFO and VP, Institutional Giving to ensure that fundraising policies, processes and reporting align with Chicago Children’s Museum’s overall financial policies;
· Work closely with marketing department on specific development communications initiatives and projects.
· Oversee all special event activities for cultivation, fundraising, and stewardship, including a successful annual gala, with the support of the Fundraising Events Manager and development team;
· Develop, maintain, and grow relationships with current and prospective board members through effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies with a focus on both donor growth and retention.
· Cultivate and solicit donors alone, with Board members, and/or the President & CEO;
· Develop and manage the activities of the Board of Directors, serve as staff liaison as related to nominating, governance, and fundraising, with the support of the Board Liaison;
· Lead, manage, train and motivate the development team, the Board of Directors, Auxiliary Board members, Metropolitan Board members, key volunteers and museum staff to meet and exceed all operations, endowment, and capital campaign contributed revenue goals;
· With the VP, Institutional Giving, manage the development department revenue and expenses to optimize Chicago Children’s Museum’s fundraising opportunities;
· Participate on cross-departmental teams including Management Committee, Experience Oversight Team, etc.
· Work closely with the senior management team to maintain a full understanding of the Museum’s programs and exhibits in order to communicate effectively to donors their impact and significance; and
· As a member of the museum’s senior leadership team, fully participate in the strategic oversight and decision-making of the overall museum’s functions in order to ensure fiscal responsibility, a positive culture, collaborative relationships, and effective delivery of our mission.
The ideal candidate will bring the following qualifications:
· A minimum of ten years of professional experience managing comprehensive development teams for nonprofit organizations; proven success in leading and motivating high-performing, collaborative teams of fundraising staff and volunteers;
· Proven achievement and ability in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts programs, annual giving, planned gifts, special events, and in-kind contributions;
· Experience building an individual major gifts program and growing a major gift pipeline. Successful solicitation of six- and seven-figure gifts;
· An understanding of institutional giving including corporate, foundation, and government;
· Proven success in growing and engaging a board of directors;
· A strong professional network and knowledge of the Chicago philanthropic community is required; required to have a public role of the Museum’s externally-facing team;
· Proven experience as an essential member of a nonprofit organization’s senior leadership team, including regular interactions with high-level board members;
· Excellent financial management skills with experience in budget analysis, forecasting and planning;
· Strong development communication skills. Articulate with strong interpersonal and motivational skills, including ease and skill in conveying the mission of the organization to a wide variety of constituencies. Proven ability in verbal and written communications, including proposal development and reporting, and excellent presentation skills;
· Understanding of marketing, communications, and social media. Knowledge of new and digital media/communications strategies and digital fundraising platforms. Comfortable with data analysis and utilization of data to inform decisions and strategy;
· Creativity and entrepreneurial spirit with willingness to develop new ideas. Experience working with and contributing to creative teams;
· Ability to build and strengthen relationships with people of culturally diverse backgrounds, ages, and circumstances;
· A passionate commitment to Chicago Children’s Museum’s mission, vision, philosophy, and values;
· Ability to work in a multifaceted, fun, fast-paced, team environment; high energy, a strong work ethic, sense of humor. Ability to handle multiple projects at one time, and flexibility with work assignments and schedules;
· High level of knowledge and comfort with the technology necessary for fundraising. Demonstrated experience with the prospect and donor management capabilities of current applications such as Raiser’s Edge and/or Altru. Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook are essential;
· Bachelor’s degree or higher required.
Physical Requirements of the Position:
· Full-time position, 8:30-5:00, including mornings, evenings and weekends as necessary for meeting and events.
