This position plays a crucial role in cultivating, maintaining, and enhancing relationships with employers as well as ensuring the successful management and delivery of key services that generate over $860,000 – three quarters of the Career Center’s revenue. These services serve as the pre-eminent gateway to connect Berkeley students with the top employers from corporate industry, non-profits and government. Many employer representatives are key managers and high level executives, often alumni, who influence their corporations’ donor decisions at Berkeley. The position combines specialized program administration and information management expertise with an in-depth knowledge of the employer relations and recruiting field as well as an extensive understanding of Berkeley’s academic programs and the needs and aspirations of Berkeley students. The Associate Director oversees staff, budget and program resources, represents employer relations in interactions with campus and external organizations, and determines unit procedures and best practices. The Associate Director of Employer Relations reports directly to the Executive Director of the Career Center.
Serves as a member of the Career Center’s Management Group, composed of all unit managers to set unit policies and procedures for entire department.
Oversees the multi-faceted Employer Relations and Recruiting program that consists of major employer and student services, such as on-campus recruiting, career fairs and forums, job postings, The Berkeley Circle partnership program and employer roundtable, special visibility services, and employer information
Sets unit directives and develops a multi-year strategic plan for all employer relations activity that factors in such considerations as the academic calendar, student interests and organizations, academic departments, needs of key employers and graduate/professional schools, staffing issues, revenue generation prospects, changing job market conditions, and other employment-related
Oversees budget development for all Employer Relations fiscal, staffing, and technological resources, and develops short-term and long-range financial strategies.
Develops creative approaches to revenue generation to support the Career Center’s dependence on external sources for a minimum of $850k annually.
Oversees development of effective web and marketing resources to support all Employer Relations and Recruiting activities in consultation with appropriate Career Center staff.
Serves as the primary liaison between the Career Center, recruiting employers, Career Center staff, vendors and other key campus administrative staff for all recruiting-related issues. Develops collaborative partnerships with colleagues in similar roles on the UC Berkeley campus and at other colleges and universities.
Leads cross-functional project teams charged with upgrading existing services, responding to new challenges or opportunities, formulating recommendations, and/or implementing new policies, systems or services as
Regularly consults with employers to design customized campus strategies that will enhance their organization’s recruiting effectiveness and visibility among students.
Contributes to employer and student education initiatives including but not limited to websites, webinars, recorded presentations, workshops and educational events.
Benchmarks resources and services with other campus units or university career center.
Sets direction and reviews priorities, policies and procedures with Employer Relations staff.
Designs and develops mechanisms to gather accurate statistical data and recruiting feedback from employers and students. Analyzes quantitative and qualitative data and behavioral trends to ascertain the future of the On-Campus Recruiting Program in particular, and the Employer Relations unit in general. Provides regular reports to
Manages Handshake, a comprehensive web-based Career Services Manager system which supports the primary services of recruitment, job postings, student registration, employer registration, and career fairs.
Directly supervises professional and administrative staff in the Employer Relations Unit. Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff. Exercises full managerial authority to hire, supervise, discipline, and appraise the performance of unit Initiates merit raises, reclassifications, and all personnel changes.
Apprises management and staff regarding any changes or updates in federal, state or campus regulations that may impact delivery of services. Also keeps them current on professional best practices in the employer relations and recruiting field to enhance their overall knowledge as well as prompt continuous improvement of our services.
Represents the Career Center at meetings, conferences, and on committees, as needed or when requested by the Director.
Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career decision making, learning styles, and job search
Knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice, workshop and program
Knowledge of career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations.
Extensive knowledge of employers, the labor market, and employment trends, both locally and nationally as related to hiring students from a top-tier public university. Knowledge of professional terminology utilized by recruiting
Knowledge of industries sufficient to select employers suitable for participation in Career Center programs, and to identify expanding industries to diversify potential employment opportunities for clients
Ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, including problem identification and troubleshooting.
Strong presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization
Extensive knowledge of project management including program design, implementation, and
Extensive knowledge in designing specialized employer services that are appropriate for all levels of students and alumni seeking careers in all sectors of employment (business/industry, government, not-for-profit, etc.)
Ability to work with people from diverse cultures
Extensive knowledge of Federal, State and University regulations governing employment processes, and the principles and standards of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
Knowledge of sound personnel and supervisory practices and procedures for creating an effective, team-oriented environment. Ability to effectively manage projects and lead cross-functional project
Ability to utilize strong public relations expertise, tact, discretion and political
Prior experience in campus recruiting, management or university employer relations.
Experience managing a team and supervising staff.
