The Director of Advanced Practice develops and leads an advanced practice operational and strategic infrastructure in alignment within entity, VUMC and system goals. This role ensures the delivery of high quality and cost effective care, based upon competency and evidenced based clinical practice and research. The Director demonstrates the ability to lead individuals/teams across disciplines and possesses an ability to work with all levels of staff within a multidisciplinary group, and leads advanced practice providers to contribute to institution-wide initiatives at the School of Medicine, School of Nursing and VUMC levels. He/she provides expertise on Advance Practice regulations and oversees the credentialing and privileging process for advanced practice providers in collaboration with Provider Support Services. This leader demonstrates financial accountability with operating budgets, provider billing and productivity benchmarks. Additionally, he/she maintains expertise in clinical competency by involvement with inpatient or outpatient clinical care. Leads multiple advanced practice teams across the continuum, usually greater than 75 providers, has direct oversight for team managers and team leaders. This leader has substantial expertise in the dissemination of expert knowledge (i.e., published author, national expert, academic leader, etc.). This leader has contributed substantially to the field of advanced practice leadership and service in nursing as demonstrated through service, awards, honors and/or positions held in state, national and/or charitable nursing, hospital and/or multi-disciplinary organizations.
Clinical expertise: Demonstrates experience and mastery as practicing clinician. Serves as an internal and external expert consultant in clinical practice. Serves on department and enterprise clinical practice administrative and improvement committees. Leads practice based learning and improvement initiatives. Serves as clinical leader in external associations and organizations as demonstrated by speaking and publication expertise. Has substantial experience in research and education and leads research and educational endeavors to advance clinical practice.
Management experience : Demonstrates ability to lead individuals and/or teams across disciplines and care continuum. Has substantial experience as a unit and operational leader, demonstrating skill in the administrative and operational functions and structure within the organization and across the health system. Expertise in transformational leadership, developing advanced practice nurses and others into leadership roles. Encourages collaboration and team building. Effectively reaches organizational goals while maintaining team cohesiveness and satisfaction.
Expert skill in facilitation, consensus-building and negotiation : Demonstrates ability to work with all levels of staff, including administrators, executive leaders, physicians and peers. Serves on departmental, institutional and system-wide committees, representing advanced practice. Demonstrates expert ability to lead meetings effectively, achieve consensus among interprofessional groups and navigate conflict.
Understanding of broader group goals : Expert comprehension of advanced practice contributions to institution-wide initiatives on both the medical group and health system level. Serves as a main point of contact for senior leaders across the patient care center, entity and enterprise. Supports and often leads in the development, pursuit and achievement of strategic and organizational goals.
Expertise on practice and regulatory compliance : Expert knowledge and application of national, state and institutional advanced practice regulations, education, clinical training, licensure, certification and scope of practice. Advocates for top of license practice. Leads initiatives to develop and/or modify policies and procedures. Serves as external expert in understanding advanced practice educational curriculums, guidelines set forth by regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission; and state and national laws governing advanced practice. Serves as an internal consultant for institutional regulations such as nursing and medical staff bylaws, credentialing and privileging, VUMC policies and procedures.

Collaborates with senior clinical and administrative staff to establish the mission, strategic plan, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans and policies for advanced practice. Identifies, allocates and proposes resources to deliver projects/initiatives aligned with organizational mission.

Establishes and maintains an environment of trust, fairness, consistency and confidentiality with team members and with other internal and external customers consistent with VUMC credo. Listens and seeks clarification through Elevate rounding. Reviews rounding logs and use findings to develop solutions to identified issues within scope of accountability. Represents needs and interests of advanced practice provider team to all levels of the leadership structure, enterprise wide level. Communicates effectively orally and in writing. Utilizes active methods to solicit input from staff and faculty.

Acts as an ongoing resource for clinical and process issues. Serves as a member of administrative and clinical committees, as appropriate. In collaboration with hospital administration, will resolve process and clinical challenges as identified through QI & QA initiatives.
Participates in program planning. Assists in the preparation and submission of capital and operating budgets related to advance practice nursing. Monitors expense and revenue budgets for advanced practice provider practice and manages to optimize budget performance. Monitors advanced practice provider billing performance and consistence with compliance standards

Interviews and hires staff to meet clinical and operational needs for current and future programs using selection processes consistent with organizational expectations. Develops recruitment strategies and retention plans.
Coordinates an infrastructure for Advance Practice through support of the credentialing process in collaboration with Provider Support Services; Provides support to department leadership in establishing practice protocols. Develops processes to collect, verify, and evaluate data relevant to professional performance. Ensures resources are available for relevant data collection. Provides overview for current competencies and compliance. Oversees implementation of departmental-based performance improvement for ongoing professional practice evaluation. Oversees and assists in completion of new practitioner orientation. Ensures consistency with overall VUMC standards and practices. Works closely with the office of Advanced Practice to ensure consistent application of central policies, processes, procedures and systems. Accountable for the operationalization of the regulations specific to advanced practice.
Supports staff participation in education initiatives, including advancing their education. Supports advanced practice involvement in staff education. Promotes advanced practice research efforts. Develops educational programs and tracks for continuous learning. Develops and promotes leadership training and proficiency. Promotes advanced education and career development. Ensures collaboration between entity APRNs and the School of Nursing.

>10 years clinical experience with patient population and/or as an Advanced Practice Provider, >5 years management experience; Additional masters in health care related field of study and/or advanced degree beyond Master's, Doctor Nursing Practice or Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing, Experience in education, research and publication. Nursing executive board certification.
