The Senior Grant Writer position is responsible for conducting the full range of grants management activities required to research, cultivate, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation, government, and corporate sources.
Under the leadership of the Director of Grants and Executive Vice President to ensure grant activity supports A Safe Haven mission, goals, and strategic planning efforts
Represent A Safe Haven at meetings with community representatives and participate in local committees related to A Safe Haven mission and goals to include Continuum of Care, homelessness, housing, youth development, social enterprise, substance abuse, mental health, and workforce development
Keep apprised of relevant funding trends in government, corporate, and foundation giving strategies
Prioritize projects to keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner, meet deadlines and manage supplemental material required for proposals
Collaborate with Executive Vice President, and Program Directors to collect accurate and current program information and data for use in proposals and reports
Create a comprehensive strategy for the growth of government, foundation, and corporate funding
Monitor legislation, regulations, developments and changes related to grants and other financial assistance, and keep abreast of all issues – compliance, reporting, accounting, auditing at the federal, state, and local levels
Maintain expertise in social and economic issues faced by special populations including: ex-offenders, homeless families with children, youth, LGBTQ individuals, and veterans
Assemble and submit grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and presentations
Assume responsibility for tracking the cultivation and stewardship processes of institutional donors and prospects
Participate in bidders conferences with city, state, and federal grant opportunities
Work with the program team to maintain compliance with the objectives set forth in each grant Keep accurate records via spreadsheets and centralized filing system
May provide direction and supervision to junior level staff
Travel occasionally to donor meetings
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of non-profit administration and social services
Knowledge of budgeting as it relates to grants and proposals
Must possess excellent writing, technical, analytical, problem solving, conceptualizing, project management, and research skills
Ability to be a self-starter who is flexible and thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where commitment to mission is critical to success
Ability to be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and highly-organized
Ability to use online databases and other sources to locate biographical, financial, and philanthropic information
Ability to understand budgets as they relate to proposals and grants
Ability to write foundation grant proposals and ability to manage several assignments concurrently
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university and minimum of seven (7) years grant writing experience is required. Excellent communication skills also required. Project Management certification, is a definite plus!
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, e-mail, and internet
Familiarity with Foundation Center and GuideStar database is preferred
