Job Summary: The Director Sustainability will develop, coordinate and administer programs and policies within the area of sustainability at Northwestern University to include facilitating student and faculty programs. The Director will achieve cost savings and will support fundraising, and grant awards in the area of sustainability. The Director will act on behalf of the Vice President of Facilities Management to facilitate programs with local, state and national organizations in the areas of sustainability and energy management.
Position’s Scope: • The Director will be expected to function as a visionary leader and organizational strategist to help Northwestern become a national model for sustainability in higher education. The Director will evaluate the needs of the University community, assemble and lead teams to create the strategy to integrate sustainability into both the operational and academic functions of the University, and network with and facilitate internal and external resources to accomplish that goal.
• The Director will be responsible for developing programs, sustainability initiatives and detailed implementation plans to achieve Northwestern goals. Goals shall be supported by Key Performance Indicators that will be reported to the University and its communities.
• The Director will build effective partnerships and relationships with academic and administrative units of the University and will coordinate, support, and expand opportunities for faculty, staff, students and administrators to learn about sustainability issues throughout the academic and operational dimensions of University life.
• The Director will create and implement communication strategies to promote broad awareness of initiatives and develop a University-wide process and organizational structure to support sustainability inquiry, change, and assessment. The Director will build effective partnerships and relationships with surrounding communities and key Chicago and Evanston institutions. As Northwestern continues to grow, the Director will be responsible for energy and sustainability initiatives in those footprints to include liaising with those host communities.
• The Director will be responsible for promoting sustainability initiatives throughout the University and will coordinate sustainability initiatives with the City of Chicago and the City of Evanston. This will require working closely with all administrative and academic departments, student groups, alumni, and various campus entities to promote the implementation of sustainable practices in the day-to-day business of the University. It will also require working closely with the Provost, Deans, and ISEN to promote the incorporation of sustainable teaching and practices into courses, practicums, and research in order to teach students about sustainability and how to incorporate sustainable principles in their future professions.
• Identify desirable sustainability initiatives and assess their cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and acceptance by the Northwestern community. Generate program ideas, provide resources, and initiate University-wide sustainability. Participate in building involvement and support for sustainability projects. Focus efforts on the goals and objectives of the University’s sustainability initiatives. Identify and pursue grant funding, rebate programs, or other savings programs. Initiate new programs to establish and strengthen sustainable practices across the University and work to foster collaboration among the areas of teaching, research, campus operations, student life, and community service. • Develop, plan, coordinate and implement activities including seminars, conferences, workshops, short courses, public events and other programs related to sustainability at Northwestern. Both the manner in which these activities are organized and the nature of their content should be geared towards achieving buy-in and cultural change from student, faculty and staff community members. • Oversee the collection, synthesis, and dissemination of data on energy use and other performance indicators for the campus. This would include such things as the compilation of performance data on specific buildings and its dissemination through online data, educational signage, brochures, etc. • Encourage and facilitate sustainability programs initiated by student, faculty and staff community members. Foster and coordinate new ideas and concepts for sustainability programming themes and identify materials and resources to supplement, expand or modify existing sustainability programming. • Develop ideas and strategy to promote sustainability efforts and create detailed implementation plans. Work with appropriate departments, committees, and individuals to implement sustainability projects. Create a sustainability agenda in concert with the appropriate senior university leadership. • Liaise with counterparts at other educational institutions, businesses, government, and the community to promote collaboration and information exchange regarding emerging sustainable practice activities. • Serve as the clearinghouse for requests for information related to sustainability issues and complete surveys among higher education institutions. Help students and other members of the community understand the issues regarding sustainability and to adopt behaviors that will promote a sustainable society. Provide a link for administration and staff to student groups as well as others with interests related to sustainability. • Work with Public Relations to secure coverage of sustainability initiatives and serve as a primary contact for the media on sustainability issues. • Chair a University-wide sustainability committee of faculty, staff, and students to further the University’s goals for sustainability. Produce an annual University Sustainability report. Plan and produce an annual summit on Northwestern University sustainability. • Create and maintain a Northwestern Sustainability website.
Minimum Qualifications: • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience. • Minimum 5 years’ experience of successful management of large ($30M+) energy management programs in a large campus setting. • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a facilities organization with central plant services; experience with Combined Heat and Power preferred.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.) • Work requires experience in program administration and the ability to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events across schools and departments. Work requires excellent analytical, communication and organization skills; an ability to self-motivate, multi-task and to work in a fast-paced environment; to work under deadlines; and the ability to work closely with students, faculty and administrators from various schools and central administration. • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team environment, build coalitions, and communicate effectively with a diverse student, faculty, and staff population. Demonstrated public speaking and writing skills required. • Ability to understand and synthesize diverse research and outreach initiatives into a cogent whole. • Demonstrated successful management of energy projects including the ability to analyze cost/benefit ratios and develop payback models. • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified. • Demonstrated experience with ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager Required. ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award recipient preferred. • Demonstrated energy savings of 10% or more required.
Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s Degree • Competitive applicants should have six to ten years of progressive experience and leadership in the area of sustainability, resource management and/or related initiatives. • ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award recipient preferred. • Experience with Combined Heat and Power preferred. • Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), Certified Demand Side Management (CDSM) and/or Certified Energy Purchasing Professional (CEP) preferred.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities) • Specific experience in the areas of sustainability policies, sustainable food systems, healthy living programs, conservation, energy, and waste/water management is preferred. • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) required. Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP), Certified Demand Side Management (CDSM) and/or Certified Energy Purchasing Professional (CEP) preferred..
