JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Radiation Safety Officer will direct and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive radiation safety program at UT Health Science Center. This position also ensures compliance with State and Federal regulations governing the possession, use, registration, licensing and disposal of radioactive materials and other sources of radiation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Oversees all facets of the daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with the University, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
Develop, maintain and execute the radiation safety program.
Design and conduct surveys and inspections of radioactive materials use in laboratories, x-ray facilities, and laser facilities.
Develop and conduct comprehensive training for radioactive materials use in laboratories, x-ray facilities, and laser facilities.
Develop and oversee compliance with radioactive limits and exposures to the public.
Interprets new and existing regulations, advises leadership on technical and regulatory issues regarding the strategic direction of the radiation safety program and applies strategic measures as appropriate.
Manage programs of critical importance; works with leadership, individual principal investigators, and safety staff in the development and implementation of new proposals as well as the coordination and administration of existing projects within the radiation safety program.
Develop and oversee radioactive waste program.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in Physical or Biological Science, Chemistry, Engineering or related field of study; five (5) years of applied health physics/radiation safety issues similar to those encountered in any university medical school, research laboratories or health care facility OR Master’s Degree three (3) years of applied health physics/radiation safety issues similar to those encountered in any university medical school, research laboratories or health care facility. Eligibility to be accepted as a Radiation Safety Officer on a broad scope license in the state of Tennessee. Eligibility to be certified as a staff inspector for x-ray equipment inspections by the state of Tennessee.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: People skills, teaching skills, written and verbal communication skills, computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Technical expertise in the field of radiological physics, including dosimetry calculations, the design of radiation shielding, the calibration and maintenance of radiation detection instrumentation, inspection and quality assurance procedures for x-ray machines and similar skills. Working knowledge of the regulations pertaining to radioactive materials, lasers and x-ray machines is also required. Ability to write clear technical reports and guidance documents. Ability to interact and communicate effectively across a wide range of disciplines and employee types. Certification to ship radioactive dangerous goods in compliance with DOT and IATA regulations. ABHP Certification preferred. PROOF OF DEGREE REQUIRED.
