The Chief Engineer is a head position for the District Energy System department working directly with District Energy Systems Management team providing high quality and effective work in the maintenance and repair of Columbia University - Manhattanville Campus (CUMVC) equipment, services, and systems. Independently; operate, inspect/round, maintain, and repair equipment and machinery in good professional manner while maintaining a high level of safety, reliability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness. Will provide oversight for the POE/DESE progression.
Ensure the efficient and effective use of staff, facilities, materials, and equipment.
Determine the needs of the operations and respond as necessary in accordance with policy and procedure.
Determine priorities and allocate work to District Energy System Staff.
Monitor work progress and pursue as necessary.
Advise on best methods or repair and maintenance, and operations.
Ensure all work is carried out to completion and within a realistic time frame.
Communicate with external agencies when necessary to organize and schedule repair work.
Ensure the work areas are maintained as per governing agencies and to CUMVC standards.
Organize and maintain proper preventive maintenance of machinery to prevent premature failure.
Communicate daily with appropriate management of work progress and concerns.
Advanced troubleshooting of equipment and systems.
Work with management to develop and prepare work estimates (time and materials required on specific work tasks).
When necessary, ensure that the Service Level Agreements are adhered to and proper time and materials are tracked.
Work with management to track, schedule and/or coordinate personnel resources.
Coordinate all time including overtime to ensure appropriate coverage.
Responsible for ensuring the supervisor and District Energy Systems Management team is informed all work taking place in the Central Energy Plant and throughout the Campus.
Duties and requirements from District Energy Systems Engineer Level 2 and prior still apply and must be maintained and current, as well as the knowledge applied to any future buildings coming on line.
Oversight, with direct and continuing supervision and development of POE to DESE progression. Under their license provide New York Buildings Department experience sign off for qualifying POEs' annually and as needed
High School Diploma or GED required.
Possess strong leadership skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
Two (2) years internal experience as a District Energy Systems Engineer – Level 2; or external equivalent twelve (12) years of experience in power plant maintenance, repair, and operation with required licenses and certifications.
Nine (9) years of experience operating a high-pressure boiler under their own active NYC High Pressure Stationary Engineer's License, or equivalent license.
Nine (9) years of experience operating a chiller under their own active NYC Refrigeration Engineer's License, or equivalent license.
NYC High Pressure Stationary Engineer's License in reference to Columbia University, District Energy System address.
