To direct, supervise, and coordinate the activities of the Infection Prevention department and system-wide infection prevention programming. This includes functional responsibility for the day-to-day operations of all components of the department and integration into the healthcare's network, planning, budgeting, clinical review, and committee structure. Maintains a key leadership role in planning and initiation of new programs that support infection prevention and patient safety within the department and throughout the healthcare system.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directs activities within the Christiana Care Infection Prevention department and works with the Chief Infection Prevention Officer to develop and implement the Infection Prevention Program for Christiana Care Health System.
Ensures all infection prevention and control activities at Christiana Care sites meet local, state, and national infection prevention and safety requirements.
Completes an annual risk assessment of the Infection Prevention surveillance program with final approval from the Infection Prevention Committee.
Ensures all short- and long-range goals and objectives for the Infection Prevention Department/program are met.
Aligns the general mission and philosophies of the department with the organization's mission and goals.
Ensures that policies and procedures meet regulations and recommended best practices.
Supports and ensures the orientation and educational programs for the department to meet the specifications for each job role.
Analyzes and applies infection-related outcomes data to improve processes within the organization and shares as appropriate.
Develops the capital and operating budgets and ensures that expenditures for the department are justifiable and within the scope of the program.
Ensures that new products and equipment that have been evaluated by infection prevention meet all safety and infection prevention standards. Supports new products system-wide that will improve patient outcomes and support a culture of safety.
Meets regularly with the Leadership in the organization to drive improvements in safety efforts related to infection prevention.
Directs hiring of new department personnel.
Completes the department's employee performance review for all direct reports.
Supports the Manager and staff to achieve top staff performance, accountability, and ensure customer satisfaction.
Supports committees, task forces, and other work groups towards the system's annual operational goals including the Infection Prevention Committee (IPC).
Develops performance improvement initiatives in conjunction with other departments as appropriate and reports outcomes to appropriate committees and staff.
Reviews changes in standards and all applicable regulations and ensures continued compliance.
Participates in state programs and government affairs activities when there is an opportunity for collaboration and input.
Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:
Maintains regular daily contact with Infection Prevention staff and Manager.
Reports directly to and meet regularly with the Chief of Population Health and SVP Quality and Patient Safety, and Chief Infection Prevention Officer.
Represents Infection Prevention in dealing with physicians, patients, family members, the press, and the community-at-large.
Serves as liaison for Infection Prevention issues to all departments providing service to the Christiana Care Health System
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: Provides direction and supervision to the Infection Preventionists, Manager and support staff.
DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Chief of Population Health and SVP Quality and Patient Safety: Maintains a matrix relationship with the Chief Infection Prevention Officer and Associate Medical Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
RN, BSN, BS required. Master's degree in Nursing, Epidemiology or related field preferred.
Demonstrated experience in infection prevention and control.
Certification in Infection Prevention required (CBIC).
Minimum of 5 years of experience in managing an Infection Prevention department.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of personnel, budget, operations, and facility management principles.
In-depth knowledge of infection prevention and control standards, policies, practices and data management
Knowledge of nursing, state, federal, local and other regulatory standards and regulations
Knowledge and skills of performance improvement activities and outcomes
Strong organizational and planning skills and abilities
Ability to communicate effectively to all levels of staff and physicians, as well as, all levels of management
Ability to make independent decisions
Ability to elicit and utilize input from all levels of staff and physicians
Ability to utilize computerized information systems and data programs to access and retrieve information
Ability to stand, sit, walk for prolonged periods. Occasional light lifting. Normal vision and hearing, manual dexterity sufficient to handle keyboard and other office equipment as per physical demands checklist.
