Under the supervision of the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR), the Assistant Director will research, write, and follow-up on foundation, corporate and government grant proposals to further the mission of Berklee. S/he will be a collegial and entrepreneurial professional motivated by the opportunity to work closely with the Director to develop and implement a proactive fundraising plan to increase support for the College's programs and initiatives during an exciting time of growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Write and edit proposals, reports, LOIs and other correspondence for submission of project-based and initiative-based grant applications to foundation, corporate, and government funders
Provide timely and compelling reports to existing funders
Using industry-standard resources, such as Foundation Center Directory, research and identify funding opportunities; work closely with the Director to proactively manage research/prospect pipeline for CFR
Manage tracking systems for proposal deadlines, submissions, outcomes, and contacts; stay abreast of prospects' funding guidelines and priorities
Input data into college database system and manage data for CFR team
Assist in preparing budgets in collaboration with the finance office and program staff
Interact with executive level and program staff, as well as with foundation and corporate staff and government grant representatives
Stay conversant with emerging philanthropic trends and best practices in foundation and corporate giving; recommend new ideas as appropriate to enable the team to creatively secure funding
Exercise good time management, critical thinking and sound judgment to prioritize projects and identify viable opportunities to pursue funding
Possible Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist major gifts and stewardship teams in the development of proposals and stewardship reports for individual donors when appropriate (for example, for donors who give through a family foundation)
On occasion, and at the discretion of the AVP of Institutional Advancement, draft, edit, and proofread written materials and correspondence for the development office (for example, materials related to the annual gala or other events)
Knowledge and Skills Required:
An interest in music, the performing arts, and/or education highly desired
Strong written communications skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information into compelling prose and effectively tailor messaging to different audiences
Minimum of 3 years of experience and an established record of success in securing gifts from foundations, corporations, and individuals through effective proposal writing
Strong organizational and time management skills, with a proven ability to set priorities, bring projects to completion, and meet multiple deadlines with a high degree of autonomy
Excellent interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work with college staff, deans, faculty, and others within the college community to develop funding proposals
Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances
Willingness to travel and work occasional weekends and evenings
The ability to fully manage data within a comprehensive database system (Datatel/ Colleague preferred) and to proactively make suggestions to improve data management practices for the CFR team
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree
Ability to research and cultivate strong relationships among foundation, corporate, and government funding sources
