Demonstrates knowledge of decontamination, disinfection and cleaning methods. Exhibits knowledge in determining the methods to be used to care for instruments: hand washing, mechanical washing or disinfection, especially in removal of protein and corrosion and in the sorting for repair. Uses the proper cleaning and rinsing agents relative to type and amount, adjusts the temperature for safety and effectiveness, follows correct procedure for loading and for operating the washer through all cycles, removes the items and distributes them appropriately.
Demonstrates knowledge of the function and operation of the decontamination equipment for optimum cleaning, loading, temperature and troubleshooting. Utilizes appropriately personal protective equipment according to departmental policy. Demonstrates the understanding that some items are cleaned and decontaminated for further processing, while some are merely sanitized, cleaned, disinfect and checked. It is cognizant of cross contamination prevention.
Thoroughly disassembles instruments, and mobile patient equipment for cleaning and ensures all bio-burden material is removed. Inspects important points in instruments and equipment to ensure they are functioning properly and there is no damage. Documents damaged instrumentation into SPM and understand the importance of reporting discrepancies. Efficiently maintains the flow of surgical instrument trays from the mechanical washer into the staging area. Thoroughly practices and is cognizant of universal standard precautions.
Demonstrates knowledge of minor surgical instruments preparation and assembly, inspection and packaging. Selects and inspects all the required instruments for each set used in the OR; arranges them in the proper sequence and in a manner for effective sterilization; adds the sterilization integrator, adds the assembly list, wraps, seals, and/or containerize; labels each set appropriately. Demonstrates knowledge of packaging techniques; use of appropriate package according to size, proper labeling of contents, proper sealing of packages (tape, heat seal or container locks), an appropriate internal integrator in each package, proper safeguarding of items needing protection in packaging (scissor ends, delicate instruments, etc.). Ensures the correct set label is affixed on the appropriate pack/container.
Uses accepted wrapping technique, works efficiently and neatly, consults assembly list for correctness, double-checks work; tapes correctly allowing easy access to tape and inner articles. Uses proper labeling method, writes on tape when possible, but limits tape use to the minimum; conforms to packing rules and density limits; ensures the pack is labeled correctly before processing. Thoroughly and accurately assembles surgical instrument trays ensuring that all items listed on the count list are accounted for and thoroughly inspects all instruments for sharpness, functionality and integrity.
Ensures accuracy when assembling multiple parts instruments, power equipment and scopes to ensure functionality. Thoroughly inspects instruments for bio-burden debris, alignment, sharpness and functionality Observes written procedures for preparation, assembling, inspecting and packaging instruments as stated in the instrument count sheet. Ensures that missing items and/or broken instruments are replaced according to protocol. Demonstrates ability to maintain an error rate within the set threshold.
Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization processes, documentation and delivery of sterile packages. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding by explanation of the functional operation of the steam, gas, plasma and pareacidic acid sterilizers in terms of time, temperature, pressure, and humidity. Describes what happens during each phase of the complete sterilization cycle. Demonstrate the operation of the sterilizers in terms of: selection of cycle, temperature selection, sterilizing-time selection, drying-time selection, closing and opening of door at beginning and end of cycle. Is able to describe the function of all dials and gauges on the sterilizer panel. Recognizes alarms and follows through with a corrective action.
Demonstrate the use and function of the sterilizer recording print-outs in terms of reading the parameters to check the functioning of sterilizer, initialing the print out, and filing the print-out in the appropriate sterilizer log-book. Documents and reports any discrepancies with the load. Demonstrates an ability to perform and read the test result for the sterilization indicators in terms of: placement in the sterilizer and reading of the Bowie-Dick test pack results, placement of biological indicators in the sterilizers, processing of HIS biological test transmittals for microbiology and documenting on SPM the results of all tests. Incorporates quality control procedures to record and label packs to be sterilized with the sterilization date, load and lot number record of each load. Accurately documents all transactions and packages to be sterilized and provides documentation and justification on rejected loads.
Accurately completes all documentation for loaner trays, implants, microbiology transmittals, interdepartmental sterilization requests forms, tray release logs and quarantine form. Thoroughly and accurately scans all items and releases them to users. Documents on the Sterilization Request Form, all quality control information and distributes items/packages to users matching item quantities with departments.
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform proper loading techniques in terms of position of test pack in the sterilizer; positioning of large instrument sets, basins, linen packs, etc., to allow for maximum steam or gas penetration; careful attention paid to the tilting of items loaded to allow for maximum drainage and drying; placement of loaded carts in sterilizer.
