The Chief Financial & Administrative Officer or “CFAO” leads the Finance & Administration division (“F&A”) at StoryCorps, consisting of the various departments managing the organization’s day-to-day operations: Finance, Human Resources, Legal Affairs & Operations, and IT. Additionally, the CFAO oversees the Corporate Partnerships and Custom Services functions, with responsibility for revenue generation from corporate sponsorships and fee-for-service / earned income engagements, such as onsite recordings, production work, and other custom services for corporate, nonprofit, and other institutional clients.
The CFAO will be responsible for ensuring the organization’s operations are based in well-grounded business and financial practices, and supported by strong and well-maintained management and control systems. Complementing the visionary efforts of the President and the CEO, the CFAO ensures the administrative stability of the organization, designing mechanisms for decision-making and problem-solving based on careful financial and strategic analysis. The CFAO will translate strategies into action plans, efficient procedures, and sound policies that support the programmatic demands of StoryCorps—today and into the future.
The CFAO serves on the Executive Team of StoryCorps and reports to and partners with the CEO. The CFAO oversees a division of approximately 20 staff, with direct supervision for a small team of senior managers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Build solid relationships with Finance & Administration, Development, and Program division staff: forge partnerships that stimulate excellent ideas and efforts; instill a feeling of cohesion within the individual departments as well as across the organization as a whole; maintain open channels of communication
Serve as an active, engaged member of StoryCorps’ Executive Team: under the direction of the CEO and working closely with other senior leaders, create, communicate and implement StoryCorps’ strategic direction, goals and work plans, and policies and procedures
Lead the Finance function: in collaboration with the Director of Finance and Finance department staff, oversee the annual budgeting and financial forecasting process, and ensure organizational compliance with all regulatory, tax, and audit requirements, as well as adherence to fiscal policies and procedures; deliver financial and operating reports to the Executive Team and the Board of Directors; appraise the organization’s financial position on a continual basis, and provide strategic recommendations and advice to the CEO, the President, and StoryCorps Board of Directors regarding the organization’s business and financial strategy; establish and maintain sound business relationships with bank/lending institutions, investment institutions, auditors and funders, as well as programmatic partnership institutions, when necessary
Direct the Human Resources function: with support from HR department leadership and staff, ensure legally compliant HR policies and programs that support the recruitment, retention, and development of diverse, talented staff; oversee annual compensation planning and benefits program design, managing costs and ensuring StoryCorps provides a competitive pay and benefits package; provide advice and direction on employee/labor relations issues and strategy and participate in activities related to collective bargaining
Oversee the Legal Affairs & Operations functions: with support from department leadership and staff, oversee effective operations and facilities management at all StoryCorps work locations; maintain all required insurance coverage and legal registrations; ensure adherence to best practices regarding nonprofit governance; and negotiate and maintain contractual relationships with funders, partner institutions, and consultants
Provide leadership and direction of the IT function: with advice and support from IT leadership and staff, monitor the technical support and security needs of the organization and ensure an effective capacity to respond to these needs
Lead the Corporate Partnerships and Custom Services functions: in collaboration with senior department leaders and staff, drive strategy and revenue generation activities in support of corporate sponsorships and $2 million earned income business for on-site StoryCorps recording, production, and other custom services for corporate, nonprofit, and other institutional clients
Actively participate in the strategic planning process; work across departments to develop annual operational action plans based on the organization’s strategic priorities, and oversee the F&A Division workplan
Perform other duties to support the CEO, the President, and StoryCorps’ financial and administrative functions, as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 10 years experience as a senior leader (including financial management, strategic planning, staffing / people management, risk management, business operations, and revenue generation)
Inspiring and experienced leader, team-builder, and people manager; able to serve as a mentor and role model of excellence for staff, and to ensure a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability
Superior communication skills (written, verbal, and presentation); ability to communicate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels in the organization and to finance and non-finance positions
Strong analytical skills and technical acumen
Fluency in Microsoft Office suite and working knowledge of G-mail; must be comfortable learning and using new technology
Passionate about StoryCorps’ mission and thrives in a diverse working environment
Integrity, sensitivity, and discretion in dealing with confidential information
Stature and confidence to gain credibility and respect of senior leadership, internal staff, and the Board of Directors
Experience in a nonprofit organizational environment with an annual budget in excess of $5 million (strongly preferred)
