Within the College, the department of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)centralizes immigration advising resources and co-curricular support programming for international students and scholars on campus. Our goal is to serve the needs of our international students and scholars and to enhance their experience in the United States and to integrate them into our community, while also contributing to their success during their tenure at SJSU and beyond .
Working independently under the general supervision of the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, the International Student Advisor (ISA) provides direct service to students in F-1 and J-1 status as part of a dynamic team serving over 3500 current international students.
The incumbent offers administrative and technical support, helps with facilitating programming, interacts with faculty, administrators, staff, and off-campus agencies. These areas often overlap in the fulfillment of responsibilities. This a fast-paced position supporting one of the key strategic goals of the College of Professional and Global Education in creating a global ethos and helping with the internationalization of campus.
Essential functions: Include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Advise international students in F-1 and J-1 status 2. Serve as Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)
3. Use a third party database such as sunapsis or ISSSM to update records and batch. 4. Work collaboratively to plan programs that enhance the international student experience at SJSU.
- Master's degree in international Education, Higher Education Administration or International Relations, Global Studies preferred. - One year of F-1 and/or J-1 immigration advising and DSO/ARO working experience. - Experience with USCIS regulations - Experience with SEVIS procedures. - Experience maintaining student data and records in a database, such as sunapsis, ISSM, etc. - Student Service Advising experience in a University setting.
- Thorough knowledge of U.S. government immigration regulations, immigration advising methods, procedures, and practices. - Experience interacting with individuals in a cross cultural environment
-Excellent oral and written communication skills. Organizational, planning, and multitasking skills
