Reporting to the Director in the Center for Leadership and Engagement, the coordinator will facilitate the onboarding and transitional experiences for veteran/military students. This involves serving as a certifying official, academic advisor and engagement coordinator for veteran/military students. The coordinator will have oversight of educational benefit applications and the certification process in accordance with state and federal guidelines. Working in concert with other academic and student support services, the coordinator will also be responsible for actively engaging with this population to create experiences that are aligned with the center’s mission of student engagement to positively impact retention, persistence and time-to-degree. The coordinator will serve as a leader to campus partners and the community in matters related to veteran/military students.
Serve as Veteran Certifying Official for veteran and military students.
Serve as secondary academic advisor for a caseload of veteran and military students.
Review, track and conduct outreach as needed for academic planning and progress. This includes students who are not meeting the University’s academic standards.
Provide access to intervention services to support students academically and personally.
Oversee initiatives designed to engage veteran and military students outside of the classroom.
Provide excellent customer service by having a comprehensive understanding of applicable requirements, rules, laws, policies, and procedures related to military education benefits. Utilize that knowledge to problem solve and process information in order to enable students to obtain military education benefits.
Coordinate information sessions during orientation for all incoming veterans and dependents.
Provide necessary correspondence to the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) and military students regarding educational benefits as well as changes to college processes and procedures.
Review, evaluate, and perform verification of student records to determine eligibility for VA and Tuition Assistance (TA) educational benefits.
Process VA benefits certifications (enrollments, changes in eligibility, amendments, adjustments, and terminations) as needed.
Keep abreast of benefits and process adjustments to existing state and federal military and veteran programs.
Establish cooperative relationships and maintain effective communication with college staff and the public to meet the objectives of the Veterans Program.
Prepare and maintain required reports and documentation, in accordance with State Approving Agency (SAA) policy and audit guidelines. This includes collecting and maintaining catalogs for all University programs that are eligible for VA education benefits.
Maintain veteran database for inspection and compliance; maintain access and usage of the Department of Veteran Affairs VA ONCE System.
Oversee hiring, training and supervision of VA work-study students.
Attend regional and/or national conferences, trainings and meetings.
Perform other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, representing the Center at campus-based initiatives, functions or events. Master cross-training capabilities in all areas of the center to assist as needed.

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree supplemented by a Master's degree in a field related to the position to be filled or an equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.
One year professional experience in an institution of higher education or in education, higher education or other field that is directly related to the functions of the position to be filled or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority. A Master's degree in a field related to the position to be filled may be substituted for one year of required experience.
Successful completion of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Online School Official Training.
A demonstrated understanding of issues facing veteran and military students.
Experience using the following systems: VA-ONCE, GoArmyEd, Degree Works and Banner.
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, student facing, dynamic work environment.
Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Outstanding organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays.
Knowledge of Department of Veteran Affairs operations, policies, and procedures.
Professional experience in higher education, certifying and/or advising veteran and military students.
Experience creating initiatives to engage students in various modalities.
