Job Requisition Number: 27009. The California Policy Lab (CPL) creates data-driven insights for the public good. Our mission is to improve the lives of Californians by generating evidence that transforms public policy. We do this by forming lasting partnerships between government and California’s flagship public universities to harness the power of research and administrative data. We work on California’s most urgent problems, including homelessness, poverty, crime, and education inequality. We facilitate close working partnerships between policymakers and researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA to help evaluate and improve public programs through rigorous empirical research and technical assistance.
The California Policy Lab is recruiting for a Communications and Outreach Manager. The position will be based at UC Berkeley but will serve both of the Lab’s two sites at UCLA and UC Berkeley.
The ideal candidate is an experienced communications professional that can plan and execute a top-to-bottom communications strategy. We seek candidates with a track record of successful communications to a range of audiences, and success leading communications efforts that build an organization’s reputation and recognition.
The Communications and Outreach Manager will join our growing team at a critical juncture in our development. We launched the Lab in January 2017 and now have nearly twenty staff across our two sites. This will be our first communications hire, and we’re excited to have someone telling our story about the good work we’re doing. In addition to typical communications work, we also want this role to expand our outreach to a variety of stakeholders, including communities that are affected by our work.
Reporting to the Executive Director at UC Berkeley, the Communications and Outreach Manager will create and implement our communications strategy, and play a critical role in how the Lab is seen by our partners, our funders, our affiliates, and other stakeholders. She or he will function as our primary media contact and will craft and cultivate our external brand. Occasional travel around the state will be required.
The successful candidate must demonstrate a commitment to CPL’s work and should be excited by the challenge of conveying sometimes-complex research concepts to lay audiences and making data analysis come alive for policymakers. We prefer a candidate with some experience working in at least one of CPL’s issue areas: criminal justice, education, health, homelessness, labor, or the social safety net.
•Develop and implement CPL’s communications and outreach strategy, incorporating fundraising, policy, and research goals into the strategy. Steward CPL’s brand for key external communications; regularly evaluate and update brand strategy to reflect CPL’s mission, values, and target audiences. •Oversee organizational editorial calendar across all channels. Shape and implement rollouts for all CPL deliverables. •Lead and support CPL staff’s outreach and engagement with affected communities and their stakeholder groups, including communities represented in and affected by our research. •Develop and oversee earned media strategy, benchmarks, and tracking. •Cultivate relationships with key reporters and outlets; serve as CPL’s media contact and, as needed, spokesperson. •Draft, edit, distribute, and pitch press releases, opinion pieces, and other media content as needed. •Manage, edit, and update website content using Wordpress. Manage newsletters and other email communications using Mailchimp. •Manage CPL’s social media presence. •Partner with designers to develop visuals and videos for public engagement. •Edit and proofread research papers and policy briefs intended for a general audience. •Serve as a public spokesperson regarding the work of CPL and engage in efforts to inform policymakers, key stakeholders, and the public. Draft talking points for staff presentations, videos, and media appearances.•A good grasp of social policy, including the areas in which CPL works. •Exceptional writing skills and experience with writing in different voices, for different audiences, and at very different lengths. •Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with people at all levels, both inside and outside of the organization. •Ability to prioritize tasks, make sound decisions, and track and complete diverse assignments. •A strong understanding of, and passion for, CPL’s work and an ability to communicate it effectively to a variety of audiences, including government, community-based organizations, funders, researchers, and the general public. •Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. This is a two year contract position.
