Associate Director, Pre-Award Research Administration - Office of the Vice Provost for Research - (19001435)
The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is responsible for pre-award administration of grants and contracts; supporting investigators in developing proposals and funding strategies for their research and scholarship; protection, management, and licensing of the University's intellectual property; oversight of the use of human subjects and laboratory animals in research and teaching and the use of infectious agents and recombinant DNA; implementation of the University's policies on conflict of interest in research and misconduct in research and scholarship; and working with other administrative offices to create an environment at the University that encourages and facilitates research. The OVPR assures that the services and resources provided by the units under its direction meet the needs of the research community and satisfies the requirements of laws and regulations that govern research, and protecting the University's interests. This includes policy development, strategic planning, and oversight. The OVPR also works closely with the research leadership of the schools and Tufts Medical Center to promote cooperation, collaboration, and sharing of resources to maintain a positive working relationship between the schools and with the hospital. Additionally, the OVPR maintains close working relationships with faculty and department chairs in order to keep abreast of the needs and direction of research and to foster an environment of open communication and responsiveness.
The Pre-Award Research Administration Office within the OVPR provides central pre-award and non-fiscal post-award services.
Under minimal supervision and with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment, Associate Director, Pre-Award Research Administration provides expert support to faculty and staff and facilitates application process via proposal review, approval, and submission. S/he reviews and negotiates terms and conditions of sponsored project awards and is authorized to conduct final review, approval and sign agreements, grants, and contracts. This position furnishes advice, guidance and oversight of sponsored agreements to ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures. S/he manages staff and provides guidance and mentors local research administrators. Duties also include proactive outreach to faculty, facilitating multidisciplinary collaborations between all three Tufts campuses, and non-financial post award services. S/he works in partnership with other administrators and faculty members and collaborates and coordinates with the Post-Award Research Administration Office, other offices within the OVPR, and Corporate and Foundation Relations to facilitate seamless approach to management of proposals and awards. The decisions of the Associate Director have a direct impact on the University and department as terms and conditions of the awarded funding legally bind the University, affect the researchers and faculty members, and influence the University compliance.
Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in grants and contracts administration in a university, hospital, or non-profit research setting.
Experience in managing compliance with federal government grants and contracts and ability to interpret and apply university and sponsor policies and procedures.
Proficiency with proposal review and electronic proposal submissions and demonstrated success and ability with contract negotiation.
Ability to analyze complex situations, identify workable solutions, and make appropriate determinations based on regulations and the particular policies, sensitivities, and needs of the Principal Investigators, departments and schools being impacted.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills.
Commitment to maintain a productive and supportive research environment while providing mentoring and technical assistance to departments.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting.
Good leadership, judgment, and decision-making skills.
Designation of Certified Research Administrator (CRA) or Certified Pre-Award Research Administrator (CPRA).
Knowledge of award financial management.
Familiarity with Tufts systems and experience of working with Tufts research administration process.
Experience in institutional process, policy and procedure development.
Ability to coach for change.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Travel between Tufts' three campuses is required at times. Non-standard work scheduled required on occasion based on deadlines. .
