Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Programs for the Data Science Institute of Columbia University, the Industry Engagement & Outreach Officer exists to assist in the execution of external outreach and collaboration with industry, foundations and government. Working to showcase the Institute's profile as a global leader in the Data Science research, education, technology innovation, and entrepreneurship, the Officer will help to shape increased engagement in the formation of strategic partnerships by fostering ongoing collaboration and membership with the Institute's existing Industry Affiliates as well as support the curation of new Industry Affiliates.
Following the lead of the Institute's Directorate, Communications, Development and Operations team, the incumbent will provide operational direction to help expand both philanthropic and sponsored research opportunities with existing and new industry partners as part of these activities. These alliances will support a number of important initiatives at the Institute, including but not limited to, funding for academic and research programs, faculty and industry collaborations, M.S. in Data Science capstone course projects, internships, student recruitment and hiring, and executive training programs.
Prospect & Relationship Management (35%)
Manage and assist in the enhancement of a comprehensive industry engagement and outreach program for the Institute by helping to identify, plan, and implement strategic engagements with key industry partners;
Work with the Executive Director of Strategic Programs to identify key industry partners and develop mutually beneficial partnerships with companies by linking the expertise of the Institute with their industry and philanthropic missions;
Aid in the development of a strategic plan that maximizes these relationships. Identify and establish new industry partnerships by developing a portfolio of 100+ prospects and assertively cultivating and soliciting those prospects;
This will include executing strategies that align industry marketing and philanthropic interests with broad portfolio of Institute programs, events, and related initiatives.
Industry Affiliate Program (35%)
Manage the Institute's Industry Affiliates Program working with our industry partners to seek student internships, develop relationships that facilitate student recruitment and hiring, and help to identify industry speakers for high level events, panels, and practicum. As well as aid in the development of new entrepreneurial programs to encourage stat-up activity with students and faculty; oversees the coordination of faculty interested in this program;
Provide support to the Executive Director's efforts to extend the Institute's work with the private sector, and to provide Industry Affiliate members with relevant and valuable programming and interactions;
Provide administrative operations expertise to leverage existing industry relationships that will increase opportunities for the Institute's faculty, researchers and students. The Manager will identify and foster faculty-industry engagement opportunities that will lead to sponsored research opportunities for the Institute;
Oversee Industry prospect and existing affiliate visits to the Institute. The incumbent will work with colleagues in the Institute and across the University to plan and execute industry/donor trips, special events, and meetings with faculty, staff, program officers, and others.
Program Management (25%)
Working under the direction of the Executive Director of Strategic Programs, help to identify and pursue research funding opportunities. This effort will require program management skills to ensure capture of large research efforts. In collaboration with the Institute's Communications team, help to execute an effective strategy for internal communication and information sharing across the Institute & University related to industry activities;
Stay abreast of news on the industry landscape and disseminates information as needed, including identification of new prospects and updates on existing prospects;
Respond to funding opportunities and invitations as they arise;
Coordinates logistics and prepares briefings for visits (campus and off-site) and other special events, and facilitate effective follow-up activity;
Implement specific outreach programs with a goal of soliciting funding for sponsored research;
In collaboration with the Institute's Operations team, the Manager is responsible for oversight and execution of Industry Affiliate marketing materials, on-boarding, invoicing and sponsor project management.
Other Duties as Assigned Required (5%)
Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years related experience required. Understanding and representing Institute expertise is required to effectively engage with the community, hence an ability to have basic understanding of the research and application space for intelligent representation of our internal capability;
Demonstrated experience with the practices and norms of industry philanthropy or government grants. Demonstrated understanding of all phases of personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding large investments ($1,000,000 and above) from corporations, foundations or government funding. Knowledge of program design and budget creation for solicitations. A successful record of assisting in the securing of grants or gifts is essential;
A motivated self-starter with a demonstrated record of helping to build and expand industry relations in a university setting. Strong analytical skills required to evaluate opportunities, develop effective plans and strategies, assess feasibility, and evaluate results;
The successful candidate must possess excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to interact with both internal and external constituents, and detailed & precise written communication skills;
Demonstrated experience with the practices and norms of industry philanthropy and government grants. Knowledge of program design and budget creation for solicitations. A successful record of helping to secure grants or gifts is essential;
Ability to quickly establish credible relationships with Industry Affiliate Members and build a broad knowledge about a variety of relevant industries essential.
Ability to travel and spend a majority of time planning, meeting with, and following up with prospects and existing donors.
Proven ability to work collegially and effectively with development professionals, school administrators and faculty, and other constituencies;
Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously with a high degree of attention to detail.
