Tacoma 2025 was adopted in March of 2015. The plan sets forth an ambitious vision for the city of Tacoma through successful achievement of five goals in the areas of Livability, Economy and Workforce, Civic Engagement, Equity and Accessibility, and Education. The Tacoma 2025 document lays out a vision of Tacoma created through partnership between city government, institutions, residents and other community partners. The ideal Community Engagement Coordinator will be committed to building relationships, using data to inform decision making, and fully embody the City's values of Integrity, Service, Equity and Excellence. Under limited supervision of the Media & Communications Director, the Community Engagement Coordinator will assist as a member of the Tacoma 2025 Strategy team focused on developing strategies to achieve the Tacoma 2025 Goals of Civic Engagement:
Increase the number of residents who participate civically through volunteering and voting
Elected officials, boards, commissions, and volunteer leadership will reflect the diversity of the Tacoma Community
Increase the percentage of residents who believe they are able to have a positive impact on the community and express trust in public institutions in Tacoma.
Representation in public meetings will reflect the diversity of the Tacoma Community
The Community Engagement Coordinator will help to achieve these goals through the following activities:
Develop a comprehensive city wide engagement strategy
Identify and implement promising practices for engagement
Hold focus groups with under-represented groups to identify issues
Work with each department to identify engagement needs and develop department level strategies
Collect data and analyze the effectiveness of proposed strategies
Identify community leaders formal and informal
Identify community organizations and champions to deepen engagement throughout community
Identify need for translation services, interpretation and develop formal city wide process and procedures to ensure access
Creation of standard city wide engagement guidelines and provide technical assistance as needed
Represent the city at various community meetings
Assist in the achievement of the 2025 goals related to Civic Engagement
Provide quarterly staff training on Community Engagement strategies
Our Ideal Candidate will be a person who possess the following skills and experience:
Experience with community organizing and outreach
Initiative implementation and evaluation
Cultural competency and understanding of DEI
Experience working with diverse communities including historically under represented communities.
Strong relationship building skills
A fundamental understanding of the historical causes of under representation and mistrust of systems
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (TRAINING AND EDUCATION): Bachelor's degree typically required, plus 4 or more years' experience in the following:
Experience with community organizing and outreach,
Experience working with diverse communities including historically under represented communities
Strategic planning and visionary implementation
Complex community and stakeholder engagement projects
Conducting research and analyzing policies, laws, rules, or regulations
Conducting financial auditing and management studies
Managing and overseeing programs, specialized or technical work processes, standards, regulations and systems
Knowledge & Skills:

Gather, assemble, analyze and evaluate facts to draw logical conclusions and make proper recommendations and prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports which require displaying and presenting statistical, graphical, and other reporting methods to audiences of varying technical sophistication.
