Position Title: Development Director Location: Crystal City, Arlington, VA Type: Full-time, exempt Reports to: Managing Director
The Development Director supports the Managing Director strategizing and executing all efforts related to contributed revenue. There will be an emphasis on growth. The position focuses on managing the membership program and increasing institutional giving while working across all departments to plan and execute donor cultivation and stewardship events (including but not limited to Opening Nights, Behind-the-Scenes production previews, and donor appreciation gatherings).
The position will be supported by a part-time assistant tasked with processing gifts, recording contact reports, generating acknowledgement correspondence and completing basic research tasks.
Individual Giving: Annual Fund and Membership Program (40%)
Carry a portfolio of major gift prospects capable of making five-figure gifts while also stewarding donors who are already engaged at the major gift level.
Solicit new annual fund donors, reengage lapsed donors, upgrade existing members, and renew existing gifts of all levels through a combination of mail, phone and in-person engagements.
Execute direct mail, phone, web and on-site solicitation campaigns.
Oversee stewardship of gifts including recognition, benefit fulfillment, and reporting/analysis.
Staff the Artistic Director and Managing Director on calls with major supporters and potential funders.
Supervise the part-time Development Assistant in and contribute to conducting and recording prospect research, briefs, and contact reports for new and existing donors at all levels.
Institutional Giving: Foundations and Government (30%)
Manage relationship with a consulting firm that has been contracted to research potential institutional funders, strategize on funder cultivation, and lead drafting of major grant proposals.
Create first draft of select grant proposals, implement edits for all grant proposals, and maintain grant materials.
Prepare/compile materials for grant submissions and ensure timely submission.
Operational Oversight (10%)
Design, execute, and continually evaluate/improve, and document procedures for acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship of all donations and development department policies.
Liaise with designers and printers to create, maintain, and stock all development collateral materials.
Manage data hygiene in CRM, in partnership with Audience Services Manager.
Special Events (15%)
With assistance from the Development Assistant, design and execute cultivation and stewardship events (e.g. Behind-the-Scenes and Opening Nights), including invitations, staffing, décor, hospitality, and all other event details.
With assistance from the Development Assistant, support annual benefit event, including extracting lists for invitation mailing, invitation mailing letter execution, and liaising with events contractor.
Institutional Giving: Corporations (10%)
Support stewardship of corporate partners, including recognition, benefit fulfillment, and reporting/analysis.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
At least four years of work experience or equivalent graduate school experience in nonprofit management with a focus on contributed revenue, particularly in the performing arts field.
A proven track record of project management and funds development.
Proficiency with OvationTix / other CRM programs and knowledge of Moves Management.
Excellent written communication skills and demonstrated capacity to write effectively in the voice of a range of others, particularly in the development of public-facing persuasive documents.
Impeccable customer service and interpersonal skills, highly empathetic and enthusiastic team-player.
Attention to detail, ability to take initiative, and self-starter possessing the ability to manage and prioritize between multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Should be flexible, dependable, possess a positive attitude and growth mindset, and be motivated by feedback.
Must possess sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information.
Capable of problem-solving independently, while leveraging appropriate channels and willing to say, “I’m not sure, what do you think?” when needed.
Proficiency with productivity applications, such as Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, required.
Knowledgeable and comfortable talking about theater with patrons, especially having a strong passion for arts education and the Synetic Theater mission and performance style.
