Bennett Day School is hiring our first Director of Intermediate School. In this role, you’ll be part of the educational team and be responsible for helping to design and implement the core characteristics of our progressive, project- and competency-based intermediate school.
The Director of Intermediate School position will evolve over the next three years. While the permanent role will oversee grades 3-7, in the 2019-20 school year, the Director of Intermediate School will be charged with the comprehensive responsibility for all activities involving students, faculty, and families in 1st – 5th grade, serving as the direct supervisor of the modified Intermediate School. The Bennett Day Middle School, grades 6 and 7, will open in 2020-2021 and you will take on the role of Director of Intermediate School, grades 3-7, in 2020-2021. As a director, you’ll play an essential role in the design of the middle years program as a member of the middle years design team. Reporting to our principal, you’ll bring your experience to the team to build the middle years program that is true to our progressive mission.
As one of our Division Directors, you’ll be intimately involved in every aspect of the educational program of our school, and have input into major pedagogical and/or curricular decision that the school makes. You’ll simultaneously develop your design and administrative skills in the oversight of the intermediate school. You’ll have the opportunity to develop meaningful educational relationships with other administrators, including our education and executive team, as well as our intermediate school faculty. You’ll also learn from your colleagues during weekly education team meetings, as well as the 5+ hours per week of professional development, which occur on Wednesdays when students are released early.

WITHIN ONE MONTH YOU’LL
Learn about all the major elements of the school, including its history, mission, vision and values to become acquainted with the school’s ethos by meeting with major stakeholders, including the CEO, Principal, faculty and parents Learn about the day-to-day operations of the school by observing and/or shadowing a non-teaching faculty member Teach us about successful models within a middle-years program based on your experience Learn about our early childhood and high school programs so that you can better see the developmental arc of our students Learn about legal requirements of government regulations and agencies; maintain the educational standards established by the State of Illinois and by those agencies that examine and accredit the school. Attend professional development experiences to learn more about at least one area of our pedagogical model with which you feel you need assistance or guidance Participate in programs for the orientation of new faculty, for in-service training of all faculty, and for the evaluation of grade 1-5 classroom teachers
WITHIN THREE MONTHS YOU’LL
Help convene the Middle Years Development team, consisting of members of the current education team as well as advisors from outside the school Take on the management and oversight of individual behavior and learning plans for third through fifth grade students Conduct regular meetings with faculty which will deal both with routine school matters and with the stimulating exchange of ideas on issues of educational/philosophical interest and concern. Engage with parents as stakeholders and work with them to manage the process of their children’s learning experience at Bennett Day Begin to function as the chief articulator of your division’s programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other information necessary to ensure that all constituencies are fully informed consistent with their individual roles. Take the lead in the academic guidance of students in grades 1-5; maintain complete academic records on all students; oversee the assessments and the reporting of standards and methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement. Maintain awareness of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of our school community in grades 1-5 and develop plans for meeting these needs. Identify core competencies to be contained in the middle years developmental map for all subjects by reaching out and getting feedback from others with expertise Attend admissions and marketing events as needed to share the school’s story to potential Bennett Day families Act as lead in the process of ensuring that teachers in grades 1-5 are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation.
WITHIN SIX MONTHS YOU’LL
Oversee the day-to-day operation of grades 1-5 Observe, supervise, and help evaluate grades 1-5 faculty in the development and implementation of curriculum; supervise the teaching process, and review and evaluate the academic programs. Take a more prominent role as leader of the Middle Years Development team, becoming the chair and/or lead designer of that team Make recommendations to the principal regarding the hiring and retention, and the grade-level assignment, of faculty in grades 1-5 Plan and present to prospective families at information sessions Be a part of admissions events for the purpose of vetting of student applications for admissions Oversee the interview and vetting process for middle years faculty Serve as a consultant to teachers in matters of classroom management, teaching methods, and general school procedures. Assist in the admission process for interviewing and evaluation of applicants for enrollment.
BY THE END OF 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR, YOU’LL
Help make enrollment decisions to finalize our first cohort of students for admission in 6th and 7th grade in the fall of 2020 Oversee finalization of the full grade 6 and 7 developmental map for the 2020-2021 school year Contribute to the master school class schedule and to assign teachers and students to classes and other obligations. Be a visible presence in all areas of the school; work toward a resolution of all problems – both routine and unique – as they arise in grades 1-5; keep the principal informed of the general programs, activities, and problems of the school. Work with the principal and director of early childhood to transition your responsibilities from grades 1-5 to grades 2-7.
DURING THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR, YOU’LL
Act as the educational leader of the school division head of 2nd-7th Grade, responsible for its day-to-day operation; direct the activities of the members of the school instructional faculty in the performance of their duties. Oversee the coordination of the co-curricular and extra-curricular activity programs of the school; to assist in the planning and presentation of school assemblies and programs; to assist in maintaining a comprehensive calendar of school events; to keep the entire school community informed of various school programs and activities. Perform other duties as assigned by the head of school.
