Departmental Overview The Department of German offers language and literature classes in German, Dutch, and Yiddish, as well as breadth requirement courses (taught in English) on German philosophy, linguistics, political culture, and cinema. The department's degree options include an undergraduate major, a minor, and a PhD. Our renowned doctoral program is affiliated with the departments of Comparative Literature and Film and Media, the Program in Medieval Studies, and the Graduate Group in Critical Theory. The German undergraduate major program provides students with the knowledge, experience, language fluency, and analytical skills necessary to enter the academic world or the world of international law or global business.
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Berkeley is a medium-sized one, big enough to offer a wide variety of approaches to teaching and research yet small enough to afford students at both the graduate and undergraduate level personal attention and mentoring. We offer an abundance of opportunities to learn and achieve mastery of the languages and cultures we study, which include Catalan, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Romance Studies and Spanish. Responsibilities Academic Personnel:
Facilitates/manages the academic review processes, identifying issues relating to policy and compensation.
Prepares case materials for submission to the Dean's Office using AP Bears and UC Path.
Determines who is eligible for review and provides information to the Chair and Director, noting any unusual or irregular circumstances that might impact the case.
Reviews case documents for accuracy and compliance with campus and college policies and advises Chair when changes in case are necessary.
Acts as facilitator for the committee, candidates, and L&S staff/Dean.
Serves as advisor to the faculty academic personnel internal review committee and provides them with documentation and advice on appropriate procedures.
Coordinates correspondence to and from outside parties and reviewers regarding cases.
Independently initiates or in response to requests from the Chair and Director, produces letters, reports and other written materials concerning faculty appointments.
Insures the outcome of the case is relayed to the Chair and Director.
Serves as an Academic Personnel Resource for the German, Spanish, and Portuguese cluster, Digital Humanities, and may support additional departments within the Division of Arts & Humanities
Provides strategic advice and counsel to unit heads by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and campus policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices and determining their impact on the department.
Advises Chair, MSP, and/or Dean of needed changes and implements or helps to implement them.

Involves an intrinsic understanding of and the ability to balance the needs of the faculty against limited resources in a climate of change and uncertainty.
Analyzes and interprets guidelines and policies to provide advice and counsel to unit clients on issues such as compensation, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as H1-B processing or PR application, and benefits considerations.
Manages the visiting faculty, visiting scholar, academic student employees, and postdoc appointments.
Assigns correct titles, salary rates, and determining benefits eligibility.
Advises postdocs and visiting scholars on policies governing their visit and coordinates appointments with the VSPA office and Grad Division as needed.
Works closely with the Berkeley International Office to obtain all necessary documentation for foreign nationals.
Where appropriate coordinates the academic search process, including placement of ads, drafting of search plans, and conducting the initial screening of materials submitted.
Works closely with search committee to guide them through the process of selection and appointment.
Prepares the Affirmative Action Search Report.
Maintains close contact with selected new faculty members to ensure a smooth transition to the university and advise regarding benefits, housing and other needs.
Retains all information regarding start-up and retention packages ensuring that the Chair, MSP, and/or Dean has all information needed to administer and track these funds.
Participates in career and professional development; serves on department, college and campus committees as needed.
Excellent writing skills.
Requires in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret campus and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses.
Thorough knowledge of system wide and campus policies, union contracts, procedures and practices that govern academic HR administration.
Thorough knowledge of campus and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions.
Ability to analyze complex management issues; develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel.
Excellent oral communication skills, including tact and diplomacy and ability to maintain confidentiality.
Experience working with online HR systems such as UC Path, AP modules.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
