Sierra Club’s Equity Department is charged with leading the organization to become a more equitable, just, and inclusive organization. To accomplish this, They are currently seeking a Deputy Director of Equity who will play a critical role in ensuring that the values of Equity, Inclusion, and Justice are echoed throughout their employee engagement, retention and employee relations strategies including complex conflict resolution and workplace investigations.
The Deputy Director of Equity feels compelled to name injustice and works towards the dismantling of oppression and oppressive systems through their work on a daily basis. This Deputy Director is energized and motivated by the thought of being a leader within the department charged with implementing this work throughout a 100+ year old organization.
The Deputy Director of Equity will play a key role in supporting organizational transformation through the management of programmatic staff, the cultivation of senior leader engagement, and the fostering of relationships with chapter leaders (regional grassroots support) and volunteers. The Deputy Director will also play a leadership role in upholding and implementing the direction of the department across the organization. Reporting to the Equity Director, the Deputy Equity Director will act as a senior manager for all equity-related matters.
This is a full-time position with a flexible location but a strong preference for the Oakland, California headquarters, Washington, DC or the Denver, Colorado office.
The Deputy ED’s essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Serve as department leader delivering measurable results and shaping overall strategy
Help drive the department to deliver measurable results and quality outcomes that help Sierra Club become a more equitable organization.
Work with senior managers and volunteer leaders to set a pace for cultural change that can be meaningfully supported. Partner with leaders to obtain buy-in and support their teams in actively advancing equity priorities.
Serve as a strategic, supportive, and accountable thought partner for creating and leading organizational and transformational change initiatives to become a more equitable and just Sierra Club.
Responsibly manage the Equity Department’s program budget and resources.
Represent the Equity Department at senior leadership functions, with external partners, and to build donor relations.
Implement annual objectives and lead the tasks necessary to drive progress on the Multi-Year Equity Plan and Goals. Take a lead role in building and maintaining a departmental culture that reflects Sierra Club’s equity values and honors commitments to deliver meaningful results.
Serve as a department manager - leading and coaching Equity Department staff
Coach Sierra Club staff to develop skills that will help enhance personal development, and equity based results-driven performance.
Supervise Sierra Club staff to develop results-oriented workplans and to hold staff accountable for delivery of performance objectives.
Make decisions regarding complex and sensitive personnel matters, including performance evaluations and feedback, hiring/promotion/termination, onboarding, labor relations, dispute resolution and mediation, etc.
Engage with staff to assign work and establish standards and priorities, and in doing so promotes a healthy work-life balance.
Manage a strategy within the Equity Department to build relationships and offer support for chapter volunteers and leaders
Identify and implement pathways and resources for building bridges to chapter and volunteer leadership structures that will promote equity.
Work with the equity teams and other staff and volunteer teams to promote equity learning and education at the chapter and volunteer levels.
Identify volunteer equity needs and work with relevant stakeholders to develop solutions for meeting these needs.
Identify capacity and resources that can be made available to promote support for chapters on equity.
Other miscellaneous responsibilities and projects, as assigned
Engage in conflict resolution to mediate, resolve, or address disputes and on-going concerns while applying the organization’s Equity, Inclusion and Justice values.
Promote communication across Sierra Club communities and in the movement to increase awareness of and support for equity change processes and initiatives.

Ability to use tact and diplomacy in dealing with confidential and sensitive matters, to exhibit responsible and respectful demeanor when dealing directly with staff and volunteers
Ability to delegate responsibility to direct reports, to support direct reports in their efforts, and to promote accountability for delivering timely results
Displays strong leadership capabilities, vision, and consistently operates with perspective of equity and justice
Ability to openly hold space, and invite others into conversations during sensitive engagements
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, pushing to meet deadlines while remaining cool and calm under pressure
Ability to diagnose and successfully handle organizational development issues
Excellent written and verbal communication skills - must be a clear and persuasive communicator to all levels
A detail-oriented, proactive leader with excellent organization and time management skills; strong collaborator
Top candidates will bring the following personal characteristics:
2 years’ experience serving in a position of senior or executive leadership
2 years of work experience in the field of advocacy (preferably racial, social, economic or environmental justice) including working with volunteers to create change
Must have at least 3 years of direct management experience
Demonstrated ability to effectively navigate complex leadership structures and address employee relations issues (experience with labor relations and matrix management is preferred)
A working knowledge and understanding of the ways implicit bias, personal identity, and power and privilege impact individuals, organizations, systems, and structures
Demonstrated ability to provide strategic guidance for building organizational effectiveness on equity, talent development for direct reports, promoting accountability and performance management
Demonstrated history of achieving results in a strategic and timely way
Experience working to address issues of discrimination on grounds of age, disability, gender, race, religion and sexual orientation in order to promote change
Bachelor’s degree and/or Educational Experience - preference on focus areas of diversity, behavioral change, adult learning/education and/or other areas related to social or racial justice. Graduate education is appreciated, but not necessary
