The Director of Student-Athlete Development & Academic Engagement will report directly to the Assistant Athletics Director, Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services, under the guidance of the Associate Athletics Director, Compliance & Student-Athlete Services. Primary areas of responsibility will be overseeing Colgate Athletics student-athlete development programming as well as supporting student-athlete academic success for assigned sport programs.
Student-Athlete Development Colgate Athletics is committed to the holistic development of all student-athletes in order to foster engaged student-athletes who contribute positively to our campus and local community. The Director of Student-Athlete Development & Academic Engagement will be responsible for the primary oversight and development of programming that enhances the student-athlete experience through promotion of personal growth, in coordination with campus constituencies and outside resources. Goals of this program include helping to facilitate an inclusive and diverse community for student-athletes to thrive within, as well as the continued growth of relationships with campus partners (such as Career Services, ALANA Cultural Center, the LGBTQ community, Shaw Wellness Institute, etc.) and continued pursuit of dynamic and engaging programming (such as outside speakers, community events, etc.). Duties include, but are not limited to:
Creation and execution of a cohesive and comprehensive student-athlete development program that aligns with the Athletics Department's vision and virtues. This program should coincide with the academic and career path of a four-year student-athlete, while balancing time demands and programming opportunities across campus;
Advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC);
Advisor to Raiders of Color Connect (ROCC) – a program aimed at providing additional support to student-athletes of color navigating Colgate's campus and community;
Assist in the facilitation of campus-wide Career Service initiatives and programming to the student-athlete population; and
Oversight of student-athlete community service initiatives.
Student-Athlete Academic Support Colgate Athletics' Academic Support Services are meant to serve as a supplement, rather than a replacement, to the resources and support provided by the greater campus community to all students, such as faculty (academic) advisors, administrative deans, disability support services, tutoring, etc. This office is dedicated to assisting student-athletes navigate Colgate and campus life, balance potential conflicts that may arise due to time demands, and help to educate on NCAA and Patriot League eligibility regulations. Colgate student-athletes collectively boast a 3.20 average GPA and 97% graduation rate, and thrive under the rigorous demands of Colgate's liberal arts foundation and curriculum. The Director of Student-Athlete Development & Academic Engagement will assist in these pursuits by supporting assigned sport programs in the following ways:
Consult with student-athletes and coaches regarding academic performance and progress towards graduation;
Facilitate interaction between student-athletes and appropriate campus and academic resources;
Support student-athletes in finding ways to effectively communicate with campus faculty and administration in order to navigate potential concerns or conflicts that may arise; and
Supplement faculty advisors by acting as another support resource for student-athletes when developing academic schedules, major exploration and planning, and maintaining progress towards graduation per university, Patriot League, and NCAA eligibility expectations and requirements.
Experience in working with and/or providing support to a diverse student population with a variety of identities, including student-athletes of color
Robust organizational skills with the ability to independently handle multiple tasks
Strong interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills
Position requires availability on limited nights and weekends for athletic events and meetings.
1-2 years of experience working with student-athlete development and/or academic support services within intercollegiate athletics
2 or more years of experience working with student-athlete development and/or academic support services within intercollegiate athletics
Previous experience working with campus/athletics data and administration systems, such as Banner, Tableau, ARMS, Teamworks, etc.
Bachelor's Degree Required
Master's degree Preferred
