Occidental Media Arts & Culture Department
Rank: Open Rank, Tenured/Tenure Track Position
Institution: Occidental College, Los Angeles, California, 90041
Occidental College invites applications for an Open Rank tenured/tenure-track position in Global and Transnational Media Studies within the Media Arts & Culture (MAC) Department. A Ph.D. in film/media studies or a related field is required at the time of appointment in August,2020.
We seek an accomplished scholar with a compelling record of publication and professional achievement in global and transnational media studies, addressing the role of media in shaping our cultural perspectives and social policies and actions around nationality, borders, migration, and associated registers of identity that determine mobility and agency.
Media Arts & Culture integrates media practice, theory, and history, allowing students to experiment with both scholarly and creative media outcomes for their work. We are looking for a future colleague who will bring innovative pedagogical approaches for engaging a diverse body of students with histories of visuality and media practices in relation to local and global cultures, while teaching them to think across media forms, theoretical domains, national contexts, and historical periods.
The successful candidate will help to fortify and build the Critical Media Concentration in the department, supporting essential offerings (such as Introduction to Visual and Critical Studies and Junior and Senior Seminars) while also developing courses around their areas of research expertise and interest. The candidate will also offer periodic course contributions to the College’s first-year Cultural Studies Program. As the candidate will be advising and mentoring a diversifying array of comprehensives projects, honors projects, and undergraduate research experiences, applicants with experience integrating their research and teaching with new forms of digital scholarship and multimodal student projects are encouraged to apply.
Candidates should also demonstrate experience and interest in curriculum development and departmental service/administration, while also helping to imagine points of interdisciplinary connection and contribution across the College.
Our ideal candidate will also help us to leverage Occidental’s proximity to Los Angeles—one of the most ethnically/culturally diverse cities in the country and a global hub of media and art—by developing opportunities for local/global dialogues, community-based learning, undergraduate research, innovative curation and exhibition, and/or media as a tool for social change.
