The REC at Greeneville functions independently from any single department and reports directly to the Dean of UT AgResearch/Director of the Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES).

RESEARCH AND EDUCATION CENTER INFORMATION
One of ten outdoor research and teaching laboratories in the University of Tennessee AgResearch System, the AgResearch and Education Center at Greeneville serves the agricultural community of upper East Tennessee. The center is located 75 miles east of the main campus in Knoxville. Founded in 1932 and originally known as UT’s Tobacco Experiment Station, the facility’s name was changed to the Research and Education Center at Greeneville to more accurately reflect the center’s mission to meet agricultural research and information needs of upper East Tennessee. The center includes some 500 acres to meet the scientists’ needs.
Research performed at the center strives to help landowners produce better and more abundant crops and healthier beef cattle. The center is known for developing better burley tobacco varieties. Most commercially grown varieties available today contain genetics developed through the center’s breeding program.
Greene County is also number one in Tennessee for beef cattle production, with historical paths known as the Drovers Road, passing through the town enroute to Asheville, NC. The Drover’s Road connected Greeneville, TN to Greenville, SC. Greene County was also number one in dairy production in Tennessee for several years, being home to the infamous PET dairy.
In recent years, commercial vegetable production has grown along the Nolichucky River bottoms, more specifically, specialty tomatoes, squash, and cabbage. Pumpkins and watermelons are also on the upward trend, along with the introduction of hemp and hops.
Currently, there are 59 producers licensed to grow hemp in Greene County FY19.
The Research and Education Center at Greeneville hosts numerous industry and public tours, including the Northeast Tennessee Beef Expo which annually attracts nearly 200 members of the ag community. Annually, the center hosts Kids Day on the Farm where the third graders of Greene County spend a day learning about how and where their food is produced.
Greeneville is also known as a retirement destination, due to lower cost of living, therefore a number of REC clientele are interested in backyard gardening and/or homesteading.
Greeneville, named for Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, lies in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The city boasts many outdoor activities for recreational enthusiasts, being home to ~20 miles of the Appalachian Trail, over 38,000 acres of the Cherokee National Forest, and several miles of the Nolichucky River, which flows into Douglas Lake. Greeneville is also a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains, being just under an hour’s drive to the popular tourist destination of Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, home to Dolly Parton.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have a graduate degree in a field of agricultural science or relevant area.
Five years of conducting and/or directing agricultural research, strong leadership and communication skills, and other personal attributes necessary to manage and direct a research and education center.
Candidates must also have a demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of equal employment opportunity and affirmative action.
Research and/or managerial experience at a university preferably at a land-grant institution is preferred.
Preference will be given to those who have an earned doctorate, have a demonstrated ability to administer budgets and manage personnel.
Possess a background or experience in agricultural or natural resource production/management.
Ability to lead, work well with others, and work with a diversity of constituents.
