CREST engages in extensive research and development projects typically funded by government agencies & industry and consists of a talented team versed in Simulator Development, Material Science, Digital Animation, Mechanical Engineering, Traditional Art and Medical Training, eagerly working along-side industry partners and hospital staff of all levels. The team has created VR surgical trainers, educational software, clinical apps, part-task trainers, simple tissue analogs and helps to conduct validation studies.The Temporary Junior Mechanical Engineer position will be responsible for assisting in the design of mechanical and electromechanical components, sub-systems, and systems, by working with other members of the team to develop and test specifications and methods, as well as working on prototypes of electromechanical systems. Will also collaborate with other team members to review mechanical design implications of work in order to provide and receive recommendations from sponsors and others in the field.This position will report to Director of CREST with a matrixed reporting relationship to the CREST Technology Project Manager.The major aspects of this position fall into the following categories:Engineering Design and Analysis 50%Design and Engineering Requirements 30%Center & Professional Support 20%Engineering Design and Analysis 50%*Assists in the research and evaluation of mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by assisting in design and development of products as they are created. Will apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials;*Confirms system and product capabilities by assisting in feasibility studies and developing test methods;*Assures system and product quality by assisting in design of test methods; using established protocols, conducting testing of finished- product and system capabilities; confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.*Assists in preparation of product documentation by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.Design and Engineering Requirements 30%*Assists in the development of mechanical and electromechanical products by studying customer requirements; researching and testing manufacturing and assembly methods and materials; soliciting observations from SME's;*Quality Focus - with oversight, sets targets based on end user needs and works with the team to translate into features and functions in order to design Quality into products;*Contributes to the team effort by accomplishing related results as needed;*Maintains system and product design database by organizing and archiving all design data and decision support data.Center & Professional Support 20%*Assists in the development of manufacturing processes by working with team and under supervision to select and modify equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components;*Maintains reputation of the University and CREST and helps to ensure compliance with government and institutional regulations;*Keeps equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; requesting special services;*Identifies and helps select new tools to improve workflow;*Enhances professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies;*Equipment Maintenance - support technicians as needed.Minimum Required QualificationsEducation Bachelor's degree in engineering, bioengineering, design, or similar field.Type and Years of Experience: Up to one year's experience in engineering, bioengineering, design or related area; some or all may be in relevant educational programs. Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:*Requirements Analysis - ability to conceptualize and translate needs into design requirements;*Design Skills - strong ability to participate in idea generation, comparison and recommendation on all projects in scope;*Presenting Technical Information - can present in writing, verbally, and 3D;*Conceptual Skills - ability to generate ideas, provide comparison and recommendations;*Experienced with Solidworks;*Working Knowledge of basic finite element analysis tools;*Experience with approaches such as spiral design, concurrent product/process development;*Familiar with additive manufacturing techniques and design considerations;Other Required Qualifications:*Strong team player and willing to mentor team members and studentsDesired Qualifications*Expertise in Additive Manufacturing;*Knowledgeable in operations of prototype shop;*Knowledgeable in cost estimation for manufactured products.Application Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
