The City of Greensboro is seeking an energetic and strategic leader as their next Deputy Director to help lead its nationally-accredited and three-time Gold Medal Award winning Parks and Recreation Department into the future. The Deputy Director must be a passionate, constructive and high performing leader who can refine and implement the vision of "Enhance, Expand, and Connect" for the Department by building on the substantial strengths of staff and existing community support. The ideal candidate will lead a dynamic and talented team, embrace change and innovation, and be dedicated to enhancing, expanding and connecting our programs and services for the benefit and enjoyment of our residents. The individual selected for the role of Deputy Director would need to assist with ensuring resources, whether capital, human, or financial, are distributed in a way that ensures operations meets the ever-changing needs of the community. Reporting directly to the Director, the Deputy Director will be an integral part of the Department's Leadership Team and will assist the Director in planning, organizing, and directing the activities of the Parks and Recreation Department, even in absence of the Director. The successful candidate will plan, organize and oversee five major operational functions the Department, including Business Services (Administrative and Internal Services/Technology/Customer Service/Special Events), Community Recreation Services, Park Operations, Safety/Risk Management, and Human Resources. The candidate must be adept at working with a diverse park and program customer base; have demonstrated strong leadership experience; have a track record of managing complex administrative problems; possess a thorough knowledge of park and program management, personnel and budget administration; possess an ability to evaluate alternatives and recommend effective courses of action; and assist the Director in the development of policies, procedures, and revenue opportunities for the Department. The Deputy Director will also build relationships, partnerships, and network with citizens, community partners, and other outside agencies that support the development and implementation of Departmental programs, facilities, and initiatives. In fact, the Deputy Director will play a crucial role in developing productive and positive relationships with elected officials, community leaders, the Parks and Recreation Commission, and other stakeholders, such as the Friends of Greensboro Parks and Recreation Foundation, to sustain and strengthen the role of parks and recreation in the Greensboro community and region. The successful candidate will have high expectations of themselves and other staff, pay attention to details after understanding the big picture, and will provide day-to-day leadership for employees through communication and demonstration of the organization's vision, mission, and values. The successful candidate will also bring a strategic perspective, be able to see beyond the immediate pressures, stay focused on the important long-term objectives and have a passion for public service. This job is Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards
Bachelor’s Degree "OR" equivalent combination of education and experience
Demonstrated experience in budget development and management including personnel, maintenance and operations, and capital
7-9 years of successful and progressive levels of responsibility across various parks and recreation divisions, culminating in a role equivalent to Assistant Director or Division Director
7 or more years of experience working with boards/commissions, community associations, and partner agencies
Ability to facilitate/manage small and large group presentations and meetings
Management experience in a department with similarly diverse facilities, functions and programming, serving populations of over 150,000 or more
Master’s degree in Parks & Recreation, Public Administration or related field
Prior work experience with Human Resource management topics such as Employee Relations, Compensation, Timekeeping Systems, Recruitment and Employee Development
