The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a National Assistant Vice President, Healthy Air to join our incredible team in the Washington, DC office. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.
In this role, you will be responsible for planning, implementing and directing the American Lung Association effort to promote clean, healthy air, fight climate change and support and advocate for the Clean Air Act. Plan, direct and manage the Healthy Air Campaign including advocacy, outreach, coalition building and grassroots activities. This is a grant funded position.
Healthy Air Leadership
Provide leadership on the planning and implementation of Healthy Air Campaign. Lead the development and implementation of strategies that support and advocate for effective regulations and policies that will maximize protection of public health.
Lead the healthy air team in identifying and setting highly measurable targets; lead and supervise the implementation of the strategy, timeline and operational plans to reach targets. Recruit and supervise staff and the outside consultants.
Supervise coalition building, outreach and grassroots activities. Collaborate with public health and medical groups, environmental organizations and other partners in identifying opportunities for developing and delivering key messages.
Identify opportunities for in-depth air pollution policy reports to support the campaign. Initiate and direct the development and promotion of those reports.
Provide leadership on public policy advocacy for climate and clean air policies. Promote integration across American Lung Association divisions and with advocacy state leads.
Develop and execute advocacy plan for healthy air. Collaborate strategically with, public health, medical and environmental organizations and others that share the common interest in protecting the public from air pollution and climate. Elevate the impact of air pollution and climate change on health. Educate policy makers.
Identify and develop leadership skills of local health professionals and patients to be spokespeople and effective advocates. Build strong coalitions and conduct effective outreach to educate the public and key audiences about the health benefits of clean air and the impacts of climate change.
Represent the American Lung Association on climate and air pollution policy issues. Serve as campaign expert spokesperson, as appropriate.
Funder Relations and Grants Management
Seek new funding opportunities from foundations and other funders to support the implementation of the Healthy Air Campaign and support American Lung Association clean air and climate public policy advocacy
Maintain ongoing communication with stakeholders as well as provide project partners/funders with regular updates on project advancements and project results on a timely basis.
Collaborate in the planning and execution of grant-funded activities with funders.
Manage and monitor grant funds with assistance of American Lung Association Finance Division.
Keep accurate and up-to-date files, records, and systems to build capacity for all campaigns.
S. or B.A. degree in public health, health policy, political science or government or related area, Master’s degree preferred.
Eight to ten years’ public policy experience as a public health professional, legislative representative or advocacy campaign director in a voluntary health organization, non-profit organization or professional society.
Working knowledge of the Clean Air Act and climate policy.
Demonstrated leadership, management, fundraising and administrative skills in a non-profit organization. Excellent written and oral communications skills required.
Demonstrated competence in appropriate computer software and data management tools.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
