JOB PURPOSE: Develop and oversee the day-to-day technical and operational functions of radiation and laser safety programs. This position will also serve as a senior leader within the Research Safety Program and will be expected to work closely with Biosafety and Laboratory Safety programs to rethink existing efforts and develop new initiatives to enhance the culture of safety and reduce risk in the research environment. Identify, evaluate, and implement controls related to the use of radioactive material, radiation producing equipment and lasers in research operations.
Act as a lead or technical expert, providing functional direction and mentoring related to training and monitoring programs, inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergency procedures.
Manage daily budget and staffing levels for radiation and laser safety program operations, and provide leadership direction to staff.
Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more functional specialization areas, such as laser safety, radiological environment protection, radioactive waste management, and/or dosimetry.
Review and incorporate government and university standards and regulations into the radiation and laser safety programs.
Recruit and retain staff; provide career and performance coaching, growth, and personal development for direct reports.
ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES:
Manages, develops and directs Research Radiation Safety including: radiation detection instrument calibration, radiation survey program, incoming/outgoing radioactive packages, laser safety, non-human analytical machines, animal research with radioactive materials, cyclotron/radiochemistry support and sealed source programs for the university, hospitals, and VAPAHCS.
Manages audits and inspections of radioactive and laser research labs to identify unsafe conditions and practices. Establishes methods of control where ionizing and non-ionizing radiation related hazards are identified. Provides technical consultations to faculty, managers, supervisors, researchers and students as needed to prevent injury. Periodically reviews procedures and updates the audit forms to meet new regulatory requirements.
Manages the radiation survey and compliance inspections in research areas at Stanford, Clinical facilities, and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), ensures that surveys are performed properly and at the correct frequency and that user surveys are audited monthly.
Works closely with Head of Research Safety on unified efforts with Biosafety, laboratory safety, etc. to improve and enrich the culture of safety * - Other duties may also be assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or related natural science field. Eight years of related progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
Knowledge of federal and state regulation compliance, ANSI standards of the radiation and laser safety programs. Experience interpreting and applying regulations in real world situations.
Demonstrated experience managing and evaluating the overall health and safety programs.
Experience with requirements of monitoring and overseeing the disposal of radioactive materials.
Knowledge to lead an effective campus laser safety program with well over 1000 class 3b and 4 active lasers.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization.
Ability to lead professionally in emergency/crisis situations. Other Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Certifications and Licenses:
Preference for Certified Health Physicist (CHP) and/or Certified Laser Safety Officer (CLSO).
Frequently lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds; rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-40 pounds or more.
Able to wear a respirator and perform duties while wearing.
Auditory acuity to hear clicks and buzzers for detection equipment.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California non-commercial class driver license. May be exposed to radioactive materials and/or ionizing radiation, Class IIIB or IV lasers, magnetic or electromagnetic fields, and lead.
May be exposed to biohazards (urine, blood, feces) while working with patients and/or animals in ER's, OR's or IR's (interventional radiology). Must gown up for sterile environments.
May require travel to off campus locations.
Must be available for emergency response and on call duties.
