Department: STUDENT HOUSING DINING SERVICES - 068026 Department Description: Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary which provides housing and food service operations to undergraduate and graduate students who live in campus facilities, and food service operations to the general campus community. SHDS is comprised of six major units (Residential and Hospitality Services, Dining Services, Office of Student Development (OSD), Inclusion & Organizational Development, Business and Financial Services, and Facilities Services), operates three campus departments (Design Services, Orientation, and Fall Welcome), and provides services and support relating to academic development and student success.
SHDS provides over 10,000 bed spaces used by UC Davis students. Orientation provides services to approximately 6000 incoming first-year and transfer students, and their families, per year. All SHDS residents may utilize Student Housing academic services. All UC Davis students are invited to participate in Fall Welcome events. Conference Housing hosts over 4000 guests each summer. The Graphic Designer supports SHDS through the creation of aesthetically appealing, accurate, engaging and intuitive visual designs to market SHDS services, events, opportunities, and educational information to key target audiences.

Job Summary: Under general supervision of the Associate Director, Departmental and Student Outreach, and at the direction of the Lead Graphic Designer, use graphic design knowledge, skill, best practices and industry-standard software to design and produce visual marketing collateral that meet university and department graphic and editorial standards that engage and motivate customers to use or contract with department services, attend programs and events, and participate in educational opportunities.
The Graphic Designer will create digital media for distribution in print and electronic formats, work on multiple concurrent projects, perform in-house production work, and oversee and coordinate pre- and post-production of projects. Digital media creation includes evaluating, designing, writing, editing, producing, and procuring content, both visual and written; recommending and/or selecting appropriate design solutions; and coordinating and collaborating with departmental and campus staff.
The Graphic Designer also supports SHDS with the development and execution of a variety of other projects and initiatives.
Physical Demands: Work in front of a computer terminal, typing on keyboard and sitting in meetings for extended periods of time.
Walking tours of buildings and climbing stairs.
Work Environment: Work occasional evening or weekend.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying traditional and electronic design principles, color theory, typography and grid design.
Demonstrated experience with graphic design, prepress production and current trends in print and electronic publications to create posters, brochures, flyers, advertisements, signage, info-graphics, Web and electronic media, presentations, and other designs for print and electronic distribution. Portfolio of design samples is required.
Experience creating and manipulating images, prototyping concepts and creating layouts using Adobe Creative Cloud, primarily Photoshop and Illustrator, and/or other professional graphics tools.
Experience with file preparation and management, including creating and setting up graphics files; managing linked and embedded assets and fonts; creating files that prioritize revisions and maintenance; and file storage/archiving.
Demonstrated skills in writing, proofreading, and editing skills; ability to proofread very small print, ability to distinguish colors in the full color spectrum when proofing designs, and ability to proofread electronic documents. Accuracy and attention to detail is required.
Demonstrated oral, written and excellent interpersonal communication skills to communicate with product owners, project teams and vendors to ensure completion of projects that match or exceed expectations.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with brands; understanding and application of, and adhering to, style guides, including appropriate selection and use of colors, fonts, logos, and written styles.
Skill to write creative and grammatically correct copy.
Experience managing and successfully completing multiple unrelated projects with competing deadlines, setting priorities to meet project requirements and deadlines, and providing updates to project stakeholders.
Experience working effectively in a service-oriented team environment.
Experience working in a large, complex organization with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities, such as government or a higher education institution.
Experience working effectively and competently with a culturally diverse workforce and constituency.
