This position is responsible for supporting the efforts of the Student Leadership and Involvement Office (SLI), primarily in the areas of student leadership development. The Associate Director for Leadership Development will be part of a professional staff team in the Student Leadership and Involvement Office, a unit within the Department of Student Life. The Student Leadership and Involvement Office provides student organizational support, programs, and services to enhance the campus life experience for students and others in the University community.
The Associate Director for Leadership Development is responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of a campus-wide, comprehensive and dynamic leadership program for students. The Associate Director works collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to offer workshop series, institutes, retreats and intentionally designed co-curricular leadership programs. This position reports to the Director of Student Leadership and Involvement and supervises the Assistant Director of Organizational Management and Policy.
Evening and weekend hours are to be expected. The Associate Director must plan to live within 15-20 minutes driving distance of campus and will be included in Dean of Student Life on-call rotation as a secondary responder.
Essential Job Functions:
Supervision, Advising, and Training (55% of time):
Provide staff oversight, evaluation, training and development in conjunction with office priorities for the Assistant Director of Organizational Development and Policy.
Develop, implement and provide daily supervision for the Student Consultants, a group of approximately 20 - 30 students who serve as peer mentors, event and Hopkins Groups managers, and educators for Hopkins 400+ student organizations and hold office hours within Student Leadership and Involvement.
Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, support, and assessment of the Student Consultants which includes overnight retreats, monthly in-service trainings, and weekly staff meetings.
Develop, facilitate, teach, and assess Hopkins Lead, a weeklong pre-orientation program for approximately 30 incoming first-year students focused on leadership development, identity exploration, and cultivating a connection to the Baltimore community.
Recruit, hire, and train the Hopkins Lead student interns and advising them on the creation and implementation of the Hopkins Lead curriculum, developing their skills as facilitators, and coaching them on how to be effective mentors.
Advise and meet weekly with one Student Government Association Class Council each year.
Advise and meet weekly with the Milton S. Eisenhower and Foreign Affairs Symposium Lecture Series.
Advise and recruit students enrolled in the Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape program and the Collegetown Fellowship program, a yearlong program that approximately 10 Hopkins students participate in each year with 40 other Baltimore college students.
Advise and recruit students for Hopkins’s chapter of the national honors society Omicron Delta Kappa, which is charged with celebrating and promoting student leadership at JHU.
Advise student organizations and individual students in leadership development, group management, university policy and event risk management, goal setting, problem solving, advocacy, attending meetings, supporting programming efforts, and identifying funds for events as needed.
Strategic Initiatives, Curriculum Design, and Assessment (35% of time):
Chair the Leadership Project Team comprised of colleagues in Student Life, Academic & Student Services, Athletics & Recreation, and other departments, with the goal of designing and implementing a unified student leadership philosophy, shared learning outcomes, cohesive leadership competencies, and leadership curriculum.
Conduct comprehensive assessment of programs and services to ascertain achievement of learning outcomes as set by Student Leadership and Involvement and divisional colleagues.
Develop, implement and assess the annual fall and spring leadership development conferences in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Organizational Management and Policy.
Direct the creation and utilization of the curriculums tool in Hopkins Groups including training departments, students, and student organizations.
Research best practices and peer institutions on an ongoing basis in order to evaluate current student leadership development program offerings and to identify areas of need and strategic growth.
Serve as a university resource on leadership development, student leadership theory, etc. as needed.
Assist in the creation and implementation of advisor training and development.
Program Development and Implementation (10% of time):
Coordinate the annual student leadership awards ceremony, including the management of nominations, selection process, communication and event planning, in collaboration with other Homewood Student Affairs (HSA) offices and departments.
Support leadership development trainings, retreats, and events hosted by other HSA offices and departments.
Other Duties as Assigned (5% of time):
Update and maintain the Student Leadership Development portfolio of the Student Leadership and Involvement website, ensuring accurate and timely resources and information about programming is widely available.
Create content for promotional materials, brochures, leadership resources, etc.
Serve as the campus liaison to the Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape and Fellowship programs.
Serve as the HSA liaison to the Center for Leadership Education in the Whiting School of Engineering.
Serve on committees as assigned.
Represent the office for open houses and orientations.
Master’s degree in student personnel or related field required.
At least five years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, student involvement, student activities, and/or leadership in a higher education setting.
