This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, permanent probationary position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
Under supervision of the Research Facilities and Operations Director and the Animal Facility Coordinator, this position will assist in providing continuous care for animals in all OLAC animal facilities. In a broad sense, it includes assistance in the daily operational management of animal care facilities sufficient to ensure that stringent NIH and USDA standards are met. Responsibilities include participation in the daily operation at all levels to assure for the maintenance of the health and well-being of the animals, maintenance of animal support equipment and facilities in good condition, and providing training and other services to support the research goals of the animal facility users.
The position responsibilities includes the participation in the husbandry and maintenance of the animal facility, planning schedules for animal support staff, monitoring of the animal census, sample collection for the animal health surveillance program, oversight of the safe use of biological and chemical materials used in animal research, inventory and ordering supplies, equipment operation and maintenance, and training of users and OLAC staff in operational policies and procedures. Responsibilities assuring compliance with all applicable rules and regulations governing animal housing and research are also critical. The Senior Technician will provide training and orientation sessions for animal facility users including instructional support staff, research staff, and graduate and undergraduate students participating in research and instructional projects. Working with the veterinarians to provide health observations and treatment to the animals along with assistance with breeding colony management are essential roles of the position.

Compensation and Benefits
Starting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $4,022 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,748 - $6,779 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.

Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned.
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Specialized Skills
Lead and/or supervisory experience.
5 or more years of experience in the care and handling of laboratory animals.
Experience in health surveillance monitoring programs including parasitology and maintenance of sentinel animals.
Experience with USDA covered species.
Experience with federal guidelines that define the standards of animal care and maintenance, formally established by USDA Animal Welfare Act and the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Experience with standard laboratory animal care methods and procedures, as defined by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to train and delegate duties to subordinates.
Skills in handling animals.
Knowledge of terminology used in veterinary medical practice.
Ability to instruct staff and students in animal care and handling techniques.
Ability to edit and write clear, precise, detailed letters, memos, policies, procedures, reports and training materials.
Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the care and use of laboratory animals.
Knowledge of supply and equipment vendors and service companies and their capabilities.
Ability to perform clinical techniques including injections, tissue collection, medication and dosages, health treatments and identification methods.
Experience with standard euthanasia techniques and philosophy, as defined by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
Familiarity with the application of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
Experience in the safe use of biohazardous and chemical materials in laboratory animals.
Experience in operation and maintenance of autoclaves, cage washing, ventilated racks and automated watering systems.
