The School of Government seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor who specializes in public management. This faculty member will work with state and local government officials in North Carolina to improve the operations of service delivery through the use of performance information and will engage in rigorous and relevant research about performance management systems. This position offers the faculty member access to important research data compiled at the School of Government, including data from the North Carolina Benchmarking Project (the nation's longest running local government benchmarking project). The successful candidate must be well-versed in performance management, benchmarking, practical analytic techniques, and research methods, and must be committed to engaged scholarship. The School of Government anticipates that this faculty member will advance both the theory and practice of performance management. The person selected will teach, advise, research, and prepare publications for state and local officials, as well as have the opportunity to teach in the School's highly ranked MPA program and contribute to the broader public management discipline. Work is centered in Chapel Hill, but requires occasional travel and consultation around the state. Faculty appointments are year-round (rather than for the 9-month academic year). Education and Experience:
Commitment to public service, ability to work effectively with diverse audiences, and a record of, or demonstrated potential for, practically focused and engaged teaching, advising, and scholarship required. Candidates with practical, applied experience in performance management in the public or private sectors are encouraged to apply. Specific experience working in state or local government or teaching public administration courses is also desirable.
