The Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at USU in Bethesda, Maryland seeks qualified candidates for an Associate Professor or Professor (non-tenure track) position. Appointment rank will be based on applicant experience and qualifications. The Department is responsible for enhancing and protecting the health of members of the Uniformed Services by producing knowledgeable and highly skilled public health professionals and by promoting evidence-based policy making, research, and service initiatives that support the global mission of the Uniformed Services.
Duties: The incumbent serves as an Associate Professor or Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics, and as Director of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree Program. The MPH Program Director will oversee all aspects of day-to-day administration of the department's MPH program, which currently has approximately 40 enrolled students, all of whom have experience in health care (including physicians, veterinarians, dentists, and nurses). The program is a 12-month master's degree program that includes both a practicum and independent research project requirement.
The successful candidate will develop and maintain strong working relationships with departmental faculty and staff to support and improve all instructional and service missions of the program, including coursework and the MPH practicum and independent research experience. Acquire and maintain working knowledge and understanding of all program requirements, distinctions, and complexities, including Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) accreditation. Engage with key stakeholders in the Uniformed Services to ensure that graduates of the MPH program possess the knowledge and skills required by the services. Meet frequently with enrolled students to provide advice and mentoring. Develop, in coordination with the Vice Chair for Administration and Director of Graduate Programs, elements of academic year planning that include enrollment projections, recruitment efforts, admissions oversight and expense budgeting. Oversee development and maintenance of program communications materials, including catalog, website, and other marketing content. Coordinate efforts with other offices in the School of Medicine, including the Graduate Education Office and USU Brigade. Develop and teach courses designed for students in the program as well as for students in other programs throughout the School of Medicine.
Qualifications: This position requires a minimum of a doctoral degree (MD, DO, DrPH, DVM, PhD) and either an MPH or equivalent experience in the practice of public health; along with at least five years of college or university experience in teaching public health. The position requires strong, independent organizational and managerial skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff and students. The successful candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level in accordance with SoM and USU academic guidelines.
The following knowledge and/or experience is highly desirable: experience with program assessment and evaluation; military-relevant public health research; a record of excellent administrative/organizational skill as well as exceptionally strong communication skills; previous experience with the U.S. military or federal government public health practice; hands on experience with the review process, program accreditation documentation and self-study preparations; and experience with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) or similar program accreditation with evidence of success. U.S. citizenship is required.
