MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS The candidate for the position of Senior Network Security Engineer must meet the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree, or vocational training in a relevant field such as computer science, computer engineering, etc., or equivalent combination of education, training, experience.
Five years of experience in information technology, network engineering, or network security.
One or more of the following certifications: CCNP Security, CCIE Security, OSCP, CISSP, CEH, or equivalent certification.
Extensive experience designing and working with firewall and intrusion prevention systems.
Extensive experience working with network access control platforms.
Experience designing and implementing security measures within public cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
Extensive experience troubleshooting and deploying solutions involving certificates and public key infrastructures such as 802.1X or SSL decryption and offloading.
Extensive experience designing and deploying web proxy and content filtering solutions for data loss prevention (DLP).
Extensive experience performing packet and flow analysis across a variety of toolsets such as in-line taps, firewall/IPS appliances, network routers, and hosts.
Experience leading design discussions and developing network security solutions.
Ability to create presentations, generate reports, and present to appropriate stakeholders, including leadership.
Ability to collaborate across an organization and effectively communicate or negotiate with others.
Experience working in a project-based environment including the ability to report on project status, evaluate project risks, and escalate project issues.
Strong collaboration, communication, management, and leadership skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for the position of Senior Network Security Engineer has the following qualifications:
Bachelorâs degree in a relevant field such as computer science, computer engineering, etc.
More than eight years of experience in information technology, network engineering, or network security.
Experience using SolarWinds as an infrastructure monitoring tool.
Experience working with the HPE ClearPass network access control platform.
Experience working with Fortinet security platforms to design firewalls and monitor intrusions.
THE WORK YOU WILL DO
The Senior Network Security Engineer plans, designs, optimizes, implements, audits, and troubleshoots network security systems to improve the overall security posture of USC and its assets. The Senior Network Security Engineer leads collaboration with other teams, including security operations, governance, and system administrators, in order to successfully design and deploy the required solutions to harden USCâs platforms. As part of ITS, the Senior Network Security Engineer demonstrates in action the ITS Values.
The Senior Network Security Engineer:
Leads and directs the collaboration of the network security engineering team with others in ITS and in other campus departments to deliver highly reliable and secure network services. Demonstrates excellence in creating and maintaining detailed written documentation. Shares experiences and subject matter expertise with other ITS staff through written and oral presentations. Provides timely communications to stakeholders, technical staff, and management, as required. Communicates and reports network security incidents and issues to university and ITS leaders.
Manages the development and implementation of solutions to protect the network infrastructure from external and internal threats. Identifies and implements innovative technologies and processes that improve the overall security of the system. Oversees and ensures compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements regarding information access, security, and privacy.
Demonstrates leadership in customer engagement when resolving network issues. Advises peers as a trusted partner. Consults with campus departments to determine the suitability and capability of devices to connect to the campus network. Aligns activities to approved security policies.
Evaluates and recommends new firewall implementations, firewall configuration changes, and projects requiring security operational support. Leads implementation of firewall solutions to properly secure campus data. Advocates for innovative ways to solve existing threats and security issues. Facilitates innovation and continuous improvement by leveraging the latest industry knowledge and maintaining currency with new technologies. Identifies opportunities to stay informed with new developments in network engineering by reading journals and other pertinent publications, communicating with vendors, and participating in professional organizations, meetings, conferences, seminars, and training courses.
Safeguards university networks and systems from cyberattacks, intrusions, infiltrations, and natural disasters by ensuring the ability of systems to recover from or withstand major incidents. Drives network security system maintenance by identifying required system patches and other periodic tasks, as needed. Reviews and monitors security appliances and enacts changes based on operational requirements. Builds network security infrastructures and coordinates the response to network-related incidents. Manages the configuration and maintenance of network equipment and monitoring tools. Manages incident responses for breaches and intrusions, including responses outside of normal business hours, as required.
Identifies operational opportunities and gaps. Implements solutions that solve security challenges while meeting business objectives. Advises on risk assumptions for any variances granted. Provides alternatives to achieve desired end results, as needed.
Contributes to an inclusive environment that values differences by building and maintaining collaborative relationships with team members, peers, and ITS leaders.
