This position will be responsible for supervisory duties for sewer transmission maintenance activities and will oversee and establish work priorities and assignments for multi-skilled work crews and special construction projects. Incumbent is responsible for monitoring and ensuring project completion by providing supervision and guidance to area leads and work crews; prioritizing and estimating time and costs; developing, recommending and implementing modifications or revisions to existing operating procedures and performance standards. An equivalent combination to:
Graduation from high school or vocational school
Three years experience supervising field maintenance and construction personnel in a wastewater or surface water industry setting,
Six years experience in a journey-level craft or engineering field, including three years as a lead supervising journey-level craft trades.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS Valid Washington State driver's license at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
Knowledge & Skills:
Materials, methods, practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance and construction
Occupational hazards and safety regulations
Principles and practices of supervision and training
Operation of various tools, equipment and machinery used in maintenance and repair work
Direct and Assist in the operations, maintenance and repair of the City's sewage and storm drain system
Perform field inspections, address safety issues and ensure compliance with safety regulations, enforcing all policies and procedures
Plan and schedule sewer transmission system maintenance and construction work
Establish and maintain harmonious relationships with City officials, employees and the general public
Maintain records and prepare reports
Use computerized information management system for generating work orders, assisting in maintenance plan creation, reports and reviewing system maintenance and equipment history
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Effectively analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action
Meet schedules and time lines
Work independently with little direction
Train and provide work direction to others, coach and mentor peers and subordinates
Assign and review the work of other
Proficiency in basic computer navigation and electronic data management

This is a competitive selection process: Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will have their responses to the supplemental questions scored as the Experience and Training Test for this position. Providing false information will result in disqualification. Those who pass the Experience and Training test with a minimum score of 70% or higher will be placed on an Eligible List for hiring consideration for a period of one year. Any vacancy that comes up within the one year period of time will draw from candidates on the Eligible List for potential interview selection. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the City of Tacoma and Local Union PTE 17. Appointment is subject to passing a pre-employment background and references check.
A nine-month probationary period must successfully be completed prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.
