As a global systemically important financial institution (G-SIFI), State Street has substantial regulatory obligations in its home jurisdiction and multiple jurisdictions in which it conducts significant operations. The US. regulatory team is part of a broader global regulatory team, including legal colleagues in the U.S., Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. The regulatory legal team provides support on a wide breadth of bank regulatory matters, including permissibility, privacy, fintech, anti-tying, anti-boycott, anti-corruption, anti-fraud, AML/BSA compliance, recovery and resolution planning.
State Street has a position for a Managing Director within the regulatory legal team. This roles responsibilities include:
Developing the talent of a team of regulatory lawyers, who have a diverse set of business and regulatory experiences
Acting as a sounding-board for nuanced regulatory legal issues and providing a supportive and also critical perspective based on strong problem-solving and technical legal skills
Overseeing a breadth of regulatory legal matters and providing guidance on prioritization, scope of work and deliverables
Collaborating with business, compliance and legal partners to find solutions to challenging regulatory requirements
Providing a thoughtful legal perspective in challenging situations that require a broad view across business needs, regulatory requirements, and practical operational challenges
Providing bank regulatory advice to business and legal colleagues to support strategic changes to State Streets business model, including new products, services, partnerships and offices
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:
Juris doctorate from an accredited university
License to practice in Massachusetts or another state of the United States
Eight (8) years or more of experience in the financial services and/or corporate department of a major law firm or equivalent experience in the financial services sector
Management experience, including the ability to delegate effectively and provide meaningful and constructive guidance
Experience in analyzing and applying complex regulations to business and compliance processes
Experience working in a federal regulatory agency or working in a law firm or in-house with federal regulators
Strong problem-solving and technical legal analysis skills
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with legal colleagues and senior executives, including the ability to appropriately challenge and offer an alternative point of view
Openness to professional challenge from colleagues and an interest in working through alternative points of view
Ability to communicate and interact effectively across multiple levels and functional areas within a large organization
Ability to provide practical guidance to assist business and corporate partners in implementing regulatory requirements
Strong prioritization and project planning skills
Willingness to learn new areas of law and proactively coordinate with legal colleagues in other jurisdictions and business areas on related areas of law or conflicts of law matters.
