Essential Job Duties:
The Office of Research Commercialization is seeking a Life Science Analyst/Germplasm Agreements Analyst to join its growing team.
The Life Science Analyst/Germplasm Agreements Analyst position is primarily responsible for managing the development, protection, and licensing of the plant variety portfolio for NC State University and assisting in the marketing, invention assessment, and scouting activities in support of the Life Sciences licensing team. The Life Science Analyst/Germplasm Agreements Analyst will work with plant breeders, inventors, government agencies, other universities, non-profit organizations, and companies to increase the commercial impact of new plant varieties. In addition, the Life Science Analyst/Germplasm Agreements Analyst will interact with external patent counsel, industry partners, and other business development professionals to assist in the review and commercialization of certain invention within the Life Sciences team.
Core duties include:
Working with plant breeders across NC State University to report new varieties, make decisions on which varieties to market, and develop strategy around and manage the process of intellectual property protection. This position is the subject matter expert in matters related to the protection and commercialization of plant varieties.
Working with external partners who support research and who license new plant varieties for commercialization. This position supports relationships with partners and negotiates, develops, and draft agreements to enable both the plant breeding program and individual plant varieties to be successful.
Reviewing new invention disclosures, assisting in the development of commercialization strategies, evaluating the need for patent protection, and negotiating contracts with industry including confidentiality agreements, inter-institutional agreements, material transfer agreements and other contractual documents as assigned, in support of the Life Sciences licensing team.
Interacting with the Venture Development team within the ORC in support of startup company formation.
Other duties as assigned.
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Candidates must have outstanding writing and communication skills.
Proven ability to build collaborative partnerships with leaders, campus partners, and external constituents.
Preferred candidates will have an advanced degree in a biological science and/or a professional degree.
Prior experience within a university technology transfer office.
Prior experience in contract negotiation or management.
Exceptional qualifications include:
Professional experience working in academic technology transfer or commercial technology licensing including documented experience in contract negotiation
Knowledge of business practices related to intellectual property protection and commercialization
Knowledge of University research or research administration, or university-industry research partnerships
