The Indiana Business Research Center at the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, seeks applications for a one-year post-doc position with a possibility of a January 1, 2020 start. The candidate will be responsible for conducting research that will contribute both to the disciplines associated with regional science as well as to the regional economic development project currently funded by the Economic Development Administration at the Department of Commerce. Regional economies are complex adaptive systems governed by networks of interdependencies, and have non-linear dynamics and trade-off attributes. The incumbent's research will explore one key tradeoff in particular –economic efficiency and economic resilience. While the research portfolio will be dominated by work applying a complex adaptive systems framework to model different regional sub-systems – particularly the entrepreneurial ecosystem – the candidate will also research how regions grow, adapt to shocks and respond to information and incentives. The empirical research portfolio will include several regional science disciplines, including entrepreneurship, economic resilience, inclusive growth, access to financial capital together with the determinants of poverty including the roles of automation and global competition, and the interdependence of rural and urban areas.
A PhD in a relevant field — such as economics, regional science, regional planning or data science with a strong background in economics — is required at the start of the appointment. The candidate will have extensive training in state-of-the-art economics or a related field and econometric analysis, including spatial statistics, as well as excellent communications and writing skills. Candidates with experience or training in complex adaptive systems are at an advantage. In addition, he or she will have extensive experience with a variety of statistical packages. The candidate needs to be able to both work well independently and also to function effectively in a team setting.
