It was originally opened in 1961 and completely renovated in 1994. CHKD attends to the needs of children on many levels, in addition to supporting pediatric education and research. Our patients come from a broad region that includes southeastern Virginia, the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina.

We house the region’s only non-military Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the region’s largest and most experienced Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a pediatric Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, a comprehensive inpatient Rehabilitation Unit and Transitional Care Unit, and short-stay areas for routine treatments.
Starting in 2019, CHKD will a flexible PGY2 residency specializing in pediatric critical care. The core rotations include: pediatric intensive care, neonatal intensive care and emergency medicine. The PGY2 residency will be selected from one of the CHKD PGY1 residents who is interested in staying at CHKD for a second year of training.
