The Dean serves as the deputy for the Senior Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and will represent her interests across the greater organization. The Dean is a senior leader within the Division of Student Affairs and serves on the collaborative and fast moving executive team of the Senior Vice Chancellor. As a leader in the division, the Dean will represent Student Affairs on committees and initiatives across the campuses and provide direction and coordination for major university-wide programs. The Dean provides counsel on matters pertaining to residential life, student conduct/community standards as well as student activities. The Dean is part of a team responsible for curating a welcoming community that reflects Northeastern's commitment to student belonging and empowerment. In addition to providing strategic direction and leadership over these three key areas, the Dean also focuses, on behalf of Student Affairs, on emergency preparedness/crisis management, policy generation and enforcement, signature programming, student mobility program integration and other strategic matters. The Dean works in concert with other members of the leadership team to deliver a world-class experience for all Northeastern learners regardless of age, stage and academic pursuit. Given the richness and accessibility of the academic programs, the Dean is responsible for integrating the student services model throughout the university's global enterprise via programming, training, and intentional collaborations and partnerships. The Dean provides direct supervision and management of a talented team of four direct reports who oversee ten units made up of approximately 70 employees. These units include: Spiritual and Cultural Life; Residential Life; Center for Student Involvement; Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution; and, the Center for the Advancement of Veterans and Servicemembers (CAVS). The Dean will also share leadership and management of projects associated with studentfocused facilities, physical infrastructure, and capital projects. The Dean will oversee the administration of 16 university budget centers, totaling more than $7 million.
In addition to departmental oversight, the Dean is responsible for:
Advising the Graduate Student Government and work in tandem with academic colleagues to strengthen the graduate student experience
Participating in the creation and management of global, experiential programs
Liaising with Northeastern's regional campus network to scale offerings and integrate services
Interact regularly with students and identify opportunities to improve the student experience
Spearheading initiatives that create spaces for identity exploration and community building
Serving on the executive duty rotation and provide consult to residence hall staff
The successful candidate will be an experienced student affairs leader with a minimum of 10 years of experience in co-curricular program planning and progressively responsible experience designing and delivering programs and services that support community and student development. The position requires experience leading and developing staff; strategic thinking and planning skills; strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills; and the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students at all levels in a complex and diverse environment. While no single candidate will have all the ideal qualifications, candidates should possess many of the following:
A master's degree from an accredited institution is required. A terminal degree (PhD, EdD, JD) is strongly preferred.
A proven record of success in developing and enhancing a sophisticated portfolio of student life programs at a college or university.
Experience in leading and managing change with a proven ability to create an organizational culture that is responsive to student needs.
Ability to work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations including first-generation college students, low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and international students.
A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and creating spaces of belonging for all students.
A record of developing a strong sense of community and belonging amongst a diverse student body.
An ability to work well and form productive alliances with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the organization.
Knowledge of best practices in student affairs and a strong knowledge of student development theory.
Experience in creating, implementing, and utilizing results of co-curricular program assessments to improve student outcomes.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Appreciation for change management, innovation, and a global mindset.
Proven organizational skills, an ability to balance conflicting priorities, and a propensity to remain calm under pressure. Ability and willingness to travel within the United States and internationally
