Essential Functions: Job PurposeOversee the day to day coordination, administration, and supervision of the front line accounting staff to ensure the timely and accurate completion of required tasks and responsibilities. Serve as a seasoned accounting professional in the application of theory and principles of accounting. Maintain and enhance University accounting practices and financial reporting. Perform complex tasks with direct responsibility for certain critical and more challenging departmental procedures and assignments. Play an integral role in the fiscal year-end close process and preparation of the University's annual financial statements.Assist with development and implementation of new procedures and programs to improve department operations and to ensure overall objective and/or mission is met. Reports to the Director of General Accounting. Essential FunctionsPerform personnel management function. Direct and oversee selection, development and evaluation of represented exempt and non-exempt personnel. Determine appropriate staffing levels. Assign work, provide training on work methods and procedures, and monitor workflow.Oversee internal and external financial reporting requirements. Compile and analyze financial information in conjunction with preparing financial statements and supporting schedules. Ensure that all financial reporting deadlines are met and financial records are maintained in compliance with prevailing policies and procedures.Facilitate the processing of financial transactions in accordance with University policies and procedures. Prepare and review accounting documents to ensure accuracy of information and calculations and correct or direct correction of entries. Process and review journal vouchers.Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure internal practices are in compliance with University practices. Evaluate progress of work in department and implement changes as necessary to improve operational efficiency. Oversee and monitor Central Accounts for fiscal integrity.Assist in the analysis and implementation of financial reporting changes (Government Accounting Standards Board pronouncements, etc.). Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.Experience Requires a minimum of 5 years relevant and comprehensive experience in financial statement preparation and journal voucher processing.Supervisory experience in a large, complex accounting department required. Comprehensive and in-depth experience in the use of Microsoft Office suite of products, especially excel, access and similar analytical and reporting tools.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesDemonstrated specific knowledge and previous hands on experience with operations and procedures in a large accounting operation. Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles overall and especially relating to fund and/or college and university accounting and Government Accounting Standards Board. Proficient in the use of complex financial management system software, preferably with Banner or comparable software in a higher education environment. Knowledge and understanding of University policies and procedures in a large, complex environment.Ability to serve both internal and external customers actively, resolve issues, and provide timely and sufficient follow-up.Keen ability to make valid and reliable evaluations of information with demonstrated attention to detail sufficient to consistently achieve high degrees of accuracy and/or desired results.Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the division and central units.
