American University seeks a forward-thinking Vice President & Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead its technology efforts and drive innovation throughout the University. Through leadership of the university’s technology enterprise, the CIO will provide critical support for AU’s strategic imperatives around attracting and retaining students, improving the student experience, expanding research and scholarship, improving operational effectiveness, and growing and diversifying revenue streams. American University is looking for a CIO who will take the university to the next level – using technology and data help create the university of the future. The CIO serves as the principal technology leader for the university, providing the vision and management for developing and implementing information technology strategies and initiatives across AU. An experienced and talented CIO will act as a key leader and collaborative partner, working with other academic and administrative leaders to further institutional goals and outcomes. In addition to driving operational excellence through improved business processes and enterprise systems, the CIO takes a lead in managing cybersecurity, improving access to critical information needed to support decision-making, and ensuring the most effective use of institutional resources. The CIO will benefit from an existing mature IT governance structure at AU that taps the support and expertise of key university leaders and provides both a significant budgeted portfolio for new investment and institutional support for life-cycle replacement – a rarity within higher education today.
The Vice President and Chief Information Officer is a key member of the University’s senior leadership team. The CIO will report to President Sylvia Burwell and lead AU’s Office of Information Technology, which includes 115 IT professionals and manages a budget and portfolio of $30 million annually. They will also be a member of the University’s Cabinet and President’s Council. In this capacity, they will contribute to the strategic vision and management of the university as a whole.

In addition, a new $90 million science building, featuring advanced laboratory facilities and classroom space, is scheduled to open in Fall 2020. In 2018, American University became the first U.S. urban research university to achieve carbon neutrality.
In January, American University launched its new five-year strategic plan, Changemakers for a Changing World. The plan charts a course for AU over the next five years and is built around three themes – scholarship, learning, and community. It includes priorities related to research, the student experience inside and outside the classroom, lifelong learning, inclusive excellence, enhancing AU’s relationship with the Washington, DC region, and improving AU’s operational effectiveness. The new Vice President and Chief Information Officer will play a key role in implementing the strategic plan.
The Vice President and Chief Information Officer will be responsible for the overall technology enterprise at AU. Specifically, they will:
Provide vision and leadership for AU’s technology enterprise, advancing AU’s teaching, research, and service missions.
Proactively advise senior leadership on emerging technologies and digital trends.
Lead IT governance, strategic planning, and relevant policy development in collaboration with campus partners.
Develop and prioritize university-wide investments in information technology, in partnership with other university stakeholders.
Communicate the technology vision and rationale for resource allocations.
Work collaboratively with campus stakeholders to facilitate the use of a mature IT portfolio and governance framework, with a focus on delivering high quality, user-oriented tools and services.
Invest in continuous process improvement by assessing business processes and enterprise systems in order to improve execution and operational excellence.
Develop a culture of high-quality, service-oriented technology services and solutions that benefit students, faculty, and staff.
Manage institutional risks such as cybersecurity, privacy, business continuity, and accessibility.
Mature the use of analytics on campus by providing access to key analytics and tools to enable data-driven decision-making.
Lead the Office of Information Technology and its team of professionals.
Partner with the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations to support the information technology underlying AU’s forthcoming comprehensive campaign, which will be the largest in the University’s history and is a key component of the new strategic plan.
Partner and collaborate with the Office of Communications and Marketing and other university offices on evaluating, implementing, and managing content management systems, customer relationship management systems, internal communication software, and other tools.
Develop strong, collaborative relationships with AU’s faculty, staff, students, administration, and the Board of Trustees.
Ten years of senior IT leadership experience managing complex technology organizations.
Experience leading digital transformation and business growth through implementing technology.
Experience leading major change initiatives; demonstrated skill in change management.
Experience implementing and modernizing large scale applications and technology operations.
Experience with IT strategy development, balancing innovation, operations, and financial needs.
Proven record of implementing successful IT strategies across multiple years.
Demonstrated commitment to a user-centric focus in the development of IT strategies and support services.
Experience fostering a culture of innovation, transparency and accountability in IT.
Experience with developing a talent strategy that future proofs IT’s staffing needs.
Ability to manage a budget in the face of evolving needs.
Experience utilizing the cloud to enable rapid deployment of services and improvements to efficiency and effectiveness of IT operations.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and creating and maintaining inclusive learning and work environments.
Sense of humor.
