Valdosta State University, the comprehensive state university for southern Georgia, seeks applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of the School of Nursing in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The appointment date for this 12-month, tenure-track administrative faculty position is negotiable, with January 2020 preferred.
Valdosta State University is a regional institution of the University System of Georgia and serves more than 11,200 undergraduate and graduate students. The campus is situated just north of the Georgia-Florida state line on I-75.

Offering 57 undergraduate and 60+ graduate degrees, including five doctorates, VSU has eight academic units: the College of Arts; Langdale College of Business Administration; James L. and Dorothy H. Dewar College of Education and Human Services; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Nursing and Health Sciences; College of Science and Mathematics; Graduate School; and Honors College.
Valdosta State accepted its first class of nursing students in Fall 1968. Development of the program was facilitated by a request from Pineview General Hospital, which later became South Georgia Medical Center, for help preparing registered nurses for the region.
VSU’s School of Nursing today is part of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The School offers three degree programs.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing – the BSN, Basic Licensure, and the Accelerated BSN, for holders of Bachelor’s degrees in other fields
Master of Science in Nursing – the MSN with concentrations in Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, and Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences
The College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS) serves more than 1,100 students and provides programs of study at the undergraduate and graduate level. Faculty members are actively involved in research, service, scholarship, and professional development.
The Bachelor of Science degree is granted in Exercise Physiology, Athletic Training, Health Sciences, and Nursing. Graduate programs include the Master of Science in Exercise Physiology and in Nursing. An Associate of Applied Science degree in Dental Hygiene is offered in collaboration with Wiregrass Technical College. A minor in Nutritional Science is offered fully online.
Faculty members are actively involved in research, service, scholarship, and professional development. The College has 30 full-time and 8 part-time instructional faculty.
The health professions programs are housed in the University’s $32-million Health Sciences and Business Administration Building. The recently constructed 150,000-square-foot facility allows students and faculty to engage in cross-disciplinary discussions and research in addition to expanding interaction with health professionals at South Georgia Medical Center and other health agencies.
The Nursing programs are accredited by CCNE. The Athletic Training program is accredited by CAATE. The Exercise Physiology program is accredited by CAAHEP. The Dental Hygiene program is accredited by CODA.
The Associate Dean position provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced nursing educator to lead a strong, growing program. The University seeks an academic leader who possesses the communication, administrative, and leadership skills to maintain a supportive and student-centered learning and working environment.
Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Associate Dean, in collaboration with program directors, faculty, staff, and students, is responsible for the following:
Managing the School of Nursing (SON) budget.
Using effective and ongoing written and oral communication.
Modeling the core values of the Blazer Creed: civility, citizenship, and integrity.
Maintaining accreditation with regional and national organizations.
Developing and promoting a rigorous curriculum that is evidence-based, incorporating innovative teaching.
Communicating a clear vision for the SON.
Working collaboratively with the School of Health Sciences and programs outside of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences for the purposes of collaborative teaching and scholarly initiatives.
Collaboratively developing, refining, and implementing appropriate policies within the SON.
Developing a strategic plan for the SON that aligns with the strategic plans of the college and of the institution.
Fostering a culture of reflective, evidence-based practice and inquiry among faculty and students.
Providing leadership in the evaluation and professional development of faculty and other staff members within the SON.
Ensuring that all programs in the SON are properly administered, managed, and evaluated.
Identifying and participating in external funding opportunities to support the SON programs.
Candidates must hold a doctorate in nursing or a closely related field. Experience teaching in baccalaureate and/or graduate nursing programs, a record of scholarship, evidence of academic leadership, and credentials consistent with the appointment in senior rank as an associate or full professor are required.

Valdosta State University
Valdosta State was founded in 1906 by a group of local legislators and concerned civic leaders. In 1993, the College became Valdosta State University, the second regional university in the University System of Georgia.
The University offers the extensive academic, cultural and social opportunities of a major university; yet, the small classes and close personal attention found at smaller institutions. Other units of the University are located in satellite facilities adjacent to the campus and nearby. The campuses and principal satellite buildings are connected by the University bus service, which operates regularly throughout each class day.
