The Communications Coordinator is a University employee positioned in the Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) at the School of Social Work. CASCW has joined the Minnesota Department of Human Services in a joint project to co-create and operate the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy under the umbrella of the Minnesota Child Welfare Workforce Collaborative. The Communications Coordinator serves as a critical member of the integrated teams of the Collaborative, the Academy and will contribute a portion of effort to the existing team at CASCW. The Communications Coordinator is responsible for developing and executing an annual strategic communications and marketing plan for the Collaborative and the Training Academy, including marketing, media relations, social media, web content, internal and external communications, and communications metrics. The Coordinator will support the Collaborative goals and provide critical support in the establishment and ongoing operations of the new Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy. This position is 100% FTE, with 80% of time and effort dedicated to the integrated teams of the Collaborative and the Academy. The remaining 20% of time and effort will be dedicated to managing CASCW’s social media, managing the complimentary nature of these teams and planning for overlap while avoiding redundancy.
Web and Social Media (40%)
Lead website content development, including writing, eliciting and posting web content, and collaborating with the technology innovation team when sites need to be created or redesigned.
Implement strategies to drive website traffic.
Manage website tone and voice, and implement governance standards to ensure content is up-to-date.
Monitor web traffic and adjust content strategy as needed to maximize audience engagement.
Develop the Collaborative & Academy and CASCW social media content and strategize presence; making recommendations for social media strategies.
Manage Collaborative & Academy and CASCW social media channels, including Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Internal & External Communications (35%)
Develop a cohesive and comprehensive internal and external communication plan to promote the vision and mission of the Collaborative & Academy while also directing dissemination of large volumes of information with multiple internal and external teams. The external aspect of the plan may include developing key messages, story mining, developing media relations materials, answering media requests, and pitching proactive news stories. The internal aspect of the plan includes staff communiques, dissemination of information to larger umbrella institutions, including DHS and UMN and their respective communications divisions, and manage internal communications such as blogs, newsletters, bulletin boards, email etc.
Work with Collaborative & Academy leaders to create visibility and identity recognition across the State.
Attend and take photos for media relations and marketing purposes.
Marketing & Branding (10%)
Develop and implement a marketing plan to promote the Collaborative & Academy and its programs. Strategies and tactics may include developing a marketing position statement and key messages, writing marketing content (e-mail, web, print, social media), in collaboration with Collaborative & Academy partners.
Manage the Workforce Collaborative & Training Academy brand(s) including overseeing the implementation of brand standards; and managing writing tone and voice to ensure cohesive messaging and brand standards.
Develop marketing campaigns, as needed, to promote Collaborative & Academy events.
Evaluate marketing activities to determine effectiveness.
Planning & Project Management (10%)
Work with leadership to develop a comprehensive yearly communications and marketing plan for the Collaborative & Academy.
Consult on committees and work groups in the Collaborative & Academy to define target audiences and develop communication strategies and tactics. Provide leadership in these areas, based on knowledge of best practices.
Communications Metrics (5%)
Monitor and compile communications and marketing metrics for the Collaborative & Academy.
Use analytics and data to inform and finesse communications strategy.
Solicit feedback from current and prospective audiences to refine communication and branding strategies.
BA/BS degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing or related field
Four years of professional communications experience.
Experience successfully developing and implementing a communications and marketing plan.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating exceptional writing skills for a variety of audiences.
Ability to work cross-culturally and utilize diverse perspective in completing job tasks and communicating with a broad scope of constituency.
Master’s degree in Communications or related field.
Experience working in human service, government or higher education setting.
Experience with web applications, such as Dreamweaver, WordPress, Drupal 8, and others.
Demonstrated understanding of content strategy and usability.
Experience with HTML, CSS, and RSS feeds.
Proven ability to manage multiple and simultaneous projects and activities, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal skills enabling one to work both independently and collaboratively and to build consensus with diverse groups of people.
Extensive experience working within communities of historically over-represented groups in the child welfare system.
