Executive Director, Office of Research, Integrity and Compliance - OVPR-2014075
The Executive Director of the Office of Research, Integrity and Compliance (ORIC) oversees a team responsible for the development and implementation of a program of oversight and training/education that ensures compliance with laws, regulations and university policies governing the integrity and responsible conduct of research at the university. This key role provides oversight of the processes of and support to the Institutional Review Board (IRB); Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Conflict of Interest (COI) policies and procedures; and management of the processes and execution of the Export Compliance Group (ECG). The executive director for ORIC acts as the institutional official (IO) for the IRB and IACUC, as well as the research integrity officer (RIO) for the university, designated by the President and Provost to coordinate investigations and inquiries related to research conducted at the university. The Exec Director also serves as a primary point of contact with federal and state agencies that oversee the university's compliance with applicable regulations.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Research Operations, the Executive Director, ORIC is a senior administrative officer at CMU and will promote and support excellence of research across the University. An important role of the Exec Director will be to work with peers in the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), Center for Technology Transfer and Enterprise Creation (CTTEC) and the Office of Research Systems and Operations (ORSO) and the Office of General Counsel (OGC) to develop or refine processes and systems needed to ensure that compliance requirements are met throughout the efficient negotiation and execution of agreements that support the research and education mission of the university.
Essential Responsibilities: * Leading and managing operations and staff in the Office of Research Integrity and Compliance who are responsible for the development and execution of a program of oversight and training/education that ensures compliance with laws, regulations and university Policy governing the integrity and responsible conduct of research (IRB, IACUC, COI, ECG etc.). This includes the development of appropriate metrics that enable the monitoring and adjustment of workload across the organization and the flow of work through the organization, which will be regularly reviewed with the AVP of Research Operations. * Direct involvement and participation in negotiation/navigation of complex compliance and research integrity issues at the university, including the coordination of research misconduct inquiries and investigations with the office of the Provost. * In partnership with relevant peers, development and improvement of processes and systems to support the university in the efficient and effective review and resolution of compliance issues. * Regular monitoring of relevant regulations and compliance requirements via attendance and presentation at relevant meetings and conferences, participation in relevant professional societies (e.g. NCURA, COGR, UIDP etc.)
Qualifications: Education: Master's degree Experience: 5+ years of relevant work experience in research integrity or compliance function(s); advanced leadership skills, oral and written communication skills and advanced strategic management and planning skills.
Preferred Qualifications: Education: Ph.D. or J.D. Experience: 10+ years of relevant work experience in research integrity or compliance function(s); direct experience or training in the sciences or a related discipline; direct experience designing and executing academic research programs
