Collaborate with UMKC Office of Registrar and Financial Aid & Scholarships to maintain knowledge about educational benefits, i.e.: GI Bill (Post 911, Chapter 30, 1606, 31, 35, etc.), in-state tuition, living allowance, and supplies stipend
Serve as the Chair of the UMKC Veterans Campus Committee
Assist in the creation of informational website for student veterans
Develop a visible network of faculty and staff who identify as veterans in all schools/colleges and administrative units
Revise and promote the Boots to Books Training throughout the year in order to increase campus and community awareness of how to serve the student veteran population
Work with UMKC Strategic Marketing and Communications to develop marketing materials for the program
Identify military student populations and help strategize where we should focus (e.g., student profiles, career paths)
Play an active role in increasing yield rates by meeting with students individually & in groups
Assist the Career Services office with research on the veteran-career transition process, with a focus on identifying transferable skills and capabilities gained through military service
Work in collaboration with the UMKC Offices of Admissions, Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to develop a plan for the recruitment and onboarding of new and current student veterans per the Department of Defense (DoD) MOU.
Assist with the oversight and management of the At Ease Zone Resource Center
Serve as the Student Veteran Organization advisor
Evaluate findings and recommendations of an executive summary with detailed analysis/documentation of interviews/process flows, as well as a high-level transformation plan
Plan, coordinate and implement events, workshops and outreach; Plan, develop, facilitate and collaborate with departments to deliver a wide range of workshops on topics such as orientations, college application, prior learning evaluation, registration, student success, scholarship application sessions and provide referrals to on and off campus resources
Develop a comprehensive Orientation/ Onboarding Program to assist student veterans with the transition to college life and awareness of available resources
Work in collaboration with UMKC Career Services to implement innovative programs and partnerships to promote education and career pathways for veterans. (VFW, American Legion, IAVA, AUSA, LinkedIN, Microsoft, Regional/US/International)
Develop and lead facilitated discussions and workshops for both campus community and student veterans throughout the year on student veteran issues
Advise Career Services on the creation of an employment pipeline for student veterans.
Elevate support for transparency/accountability of student veteran retention and on-time graduation rates
Lead Military social protocol advisor for all military events, ceremonies, observances and DV/VIP (Distinguished Visitor/VIP) visitors/guests
Build coalition to maintain Military Friendly Institution (Gold) and Military Employer Friendly Status/Department of Labor Hire Vets Medallion Program.
Coordinates with other offices (e.g. Academic Advising, Admissions, Career Services, Student Disability Services, Office of Registrar and Financial Aid and UMKC Housing) regarding the effective and efficient delivery of services to veterans and military-affiliated students.
Foster sense of community & school identity through coordination of co-curricular & curricular events
Work in collaboration with UMKC Career Services to establish the Apprenticeship program in accordance with Presidential Executive Order signed June 15, 2017
Community Engagement and Recruitment:
Promote program offerings on social media (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn, and GoArmyED).
Assist in the development of an active alumni network/community
Provide leads to the Development Office that will result in non-tuition revenue.
Assist with efforts to raise money for scholarship support
Serve as chief point of contact for all military and veterans at UMKC
Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with military/veteran, city/ state/ federal agencies, local community resources, legislative leaders and organizations
The Assistant Director will be based out of UMKC's Volker campus but will need to attend meetings at UM System campuses when necessary Local travel is required to fulfill outreach initiatives
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary
Military veteran with honorable discharge
Master's Degree and 5 years of related experience
Prior experience working with active duty or retired military and veteran groups
Strong relationship building, communication and presentation skills
Ability to balance multiple priorities, work independently, a self-starter and be able to respond appropriately to the veteran students' needs
Experience developing, implementing and evaluating programs
Ability to work collaboratively across the campus and with community partners
Commitment to student success, specifically with respect to the particular needs of our veteran student community
Full Time/Part Time
$47,476- $57,000, commensurate with education and experience.
